The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

Saying goodbye to the best job in the world

I want to take a moment here to wish Jon Washburn ALL the very best in his new and future endeavors. Jon Washburn and Bob Stewart brought me into the rain, gave me shelter during the storm, then encouraged and supported me while I helped them build and grow this great network.

I owe a great deal of my experience and success to these guys for giving me the chance, for supporting me through thick and thin, and for bringing me on board to the AR team and family.  I am forever grateful to them for letting me take deep root in the soil of this great community.

Thank you Jon for a wonderful journey! May all things good and prosperous be yours and in abundance.  The direction and path you are taking today is exactly where you are suppose to be at this time in your life and during your adventure...

Stay true to your passion my friend... always! Do something "AMAZING!" Crush It!

Via Jon Washburn (ActiveRain Corp):

I love ActiveRain and am overwhelmed with bittersweet feelings as I write this post.  ActiveRain's core mission means so much to me.  The Community, this amazingly rare group of people have far surpassed any vision I could ever dream.  I have experienced true emotion from every part of the spectrum throughout my tenure and it's all with thanks to you.  It is not an overstatement when I say this was the best job in the world.

However, the core of who I am is a startup entrepreneur and it's my passion and purpose to create new companies with the hopes of changing the world for the better.

With this purpose in mind, today I am announcing that I am moving out of my leadership role with ActiveRain and will be focusing on my new start-up DailyTicket.  I will continue to be an ActiveRain champion, evangelist, advisor and significant shareholder.

ActiveRain is a thriving community of like minded real estate professionals and a learning organization that has blessed the entire real estate industry. My initial vision for this community has been realized and it is now time for me to hand over leadership to someone with the expectation that they will continue to shepherd and uphold the values that are the foundation of our community and become the champion for a greater vision for what ActiveRain can become. The CEO selected to lead ActiveRain through this next phase is Nikesh (Niki) Parekh; he has a long history of scaling fast growing technology start-ups and worked with ActiveRain as a consultant in 2008 and earlier this year.

I will continue to work with Niki as he learns about the culture of our community, and I plan to continue to share with everyone about my experiences and challenges associated with launching a new business.

Being a part of this community since the beginning has been an experience of a lifetime. I wish to thank everyone who has supported the mission and the vision of ActiveRain.

How To Create Email Newsletters for Your Blog

Last week, I promised to show you how I was able to embed a Newsletter Style Calendar and update into a blog post.  It's easier than you can imagine. First, go to MailChimp.com and setup your FREE account.  There is a 2000 subscriber limit and a maximum of 12,000 emails you can email out each month, but for the once a month mailer like I use, it works awesome.  It's perfect for a monthly newsletter or update to your clients.

(When you build your subscriber list to more than 2000, you can consider upgrading to a paid paln if the ROI is justified.  They even offer a pay-as-you-go option for those who want to test it out first.)

Once you have an account on Mailchimp, you can create and setup a customized newsletter with a variety of links, images, RSS feeds, video, audio files, and HTML formatted content.  It's really straight forward and quite simple to.  Once you have the design and layout that you like, you can save it as a template to be used for future campaigns and mailings.  All the template layouts on Mailchimp are already included which makes the design process and setup very fast.

The Importing and Embedding Instructions:

Creating a good Newsletter is like writing a great blog post.  Your content will be the most important part so take your time and be sure to include the best of the best of the best for that month.  Here comes the best part. You don't have to mail it out to anyone if you don't want, but since Mailchimp does a really great job, you should take advantage of it.  Once your mailer is ready to go, simply copy and paste the content of your final masterpiece into a new blog post and save.  That's it!

You can use the WYSIWYG format, or you can copy the entire newsletter in HTML, and paste it into the HTML tab on your Blog post.  Mailchimp is one of the few sites I have found that has the least compatibility issues with the HTML format on ActiveRain and other sites. If you are not comfortable working in HTML, you may want to stick with creating everything in the WYSIWYG format.  The Newsletter update I created and posted earlier was all done in the WYSIWYG tab.  Another thing....

I think you'll really like the tracking, reports, and analytics that Mailchimp offers on all your mailings.  Ever wonder who and when people actually open your email?  Wouldn't it be nice to know what they read, what they clicked on, and what they had no interest at all in?  I know, the truth can hurt, but it's good to see and know what's working and what isn't.  The reports and analytics on Mailchimp are very useful and will help you deliver content that your subscribers want and find valuable.  Bounce rates, unopened, opens, dates and times etc. are all included.

Lastly are the Social Media and networking tools and options.  Once your Mailchimp campaign is created and saved, you can email it out, post it here on your AR Blog or Wordpress site, then use a specifically designated URL link to share with all your fans and friends across the social network sphere.  Here's an example of a designated URL link that comes with your newsletter or mailing campaign.  This Is The Coolest Part Of It All!  It's your created piece on a permanent URL and web address.  Your very own archive of creations.  Very Cool!

Mailchimp will also create a custom QR Code automatically for those of you into that sort of thing.  There is much more you can do with Mailchimp and for the price, I don't think you'll find a better site or tool out there to achieve all these great features.  They even have an RSS multi-feed chomper that will take multiple RSS feeds from various sites of your choice and create a custom compilation of content for you campaign.  You won't find that FREE feature out there on too many sites.

If you're not completely convinced that Mailchimp might be a tool you can use to expand your reach, offer a unique and effective service to your subscribers, readers, and friends, or give you one more avenue to reach out and touch your audience more efficiently with email, then you can go ahead and move on to my next post which will discuss and explain why email will always be the Internet "staple" for communication.

An Inside Outside Peek at Zillow - Kodak Moments Photo Tour

On my last visit to Seattle, WA, I had to attend a few meetings at the Zillow Corporate headquarters, so I decided to walk through the office with my iPhone and take some shots to share with my friends in the blogosphere.  It's really quite fascinating to walk around inside the main office located at the top of the Wells Fargo building in downtown.

I'll give you a quick tour of the office, and some of my favorite spots to hang out when I'm there.  If you're ever in the Seattle area, make it a point to stop in and say hi to my friends and co-workers there.  They're a great group and a whole lotta fun.  If you can catch me there, I'll take you down to see the fish toss, and taste the best crab in Seattle.

The views from our office are absolutely spectacular!  360 degree views around the entire building.

Welcome to Zillow, the lobby that greets you with great anticipation of your visit.

The monitor in our lobby showcases some of the featured properties you'll see on Zillow.

The views from every window in the building are truly stunning and unbelievable, this view is from the lobby.

Zillow has come a long way since 2005, the stories are proudly displayed for every visitor to see.

Hallways echo with sounds of celebrations, goals achieved, battles won, and numerous victory's and successes.

The workplace and atmosphere are incredible, even the hallways have street names so I won't get lost!

.... but I still get lost! lol~

Work weekends?  Ha! Now I know why Zillow Seahawk fans show up to work on Sundays... with binnoculars~

How do I know the staff at Zillow work very hard?  I have yet to catch someone playing table tennis. lol~

My personal favorite spot is here, they always have coffee, nuts, and a variety of cold drinks for me.

Over 200+ talented and committed people working hard to keep Zillow an industry & technology leader.

They care just as much about you and your business as they do helping consumers.

How do we R.A.T.E?  The call on the wall in the hall says it all.  I'm proud of Zillow, our principles and the team.

Oh yeah, did I mention the views???

I do enjoy spending time at Zillow in Seattle, the people who work there are very REAL and passionate. They take every task and challenge and make it exciting and fun.  There's a very transparent culture behind the walls at Zillow.  Each team and department creates a unique synergy that spreads through-out and makes up the whole of the company.  I can honestly say that the true spirit and meaning of "customer service" lives and breaths in those hallways and offices.

A cup a coffee? - $1.85  A trip to Seattle?  $299.00  Kodak moments likes these? - $P,RIC,ELE.SS

Zillow Year-End Update and Report - A Record-Breaking 2010

I'm reporting this "LIVE" from our office in Seattle, WA today where it's a GREAT day, the skies are crystal clear, the air is brisk and fresh, and the following updates and news is just too "HOT" not to share.

Here's the latest update and report for those of you who have been asking me "How's things going over at Zillow?"  I'm really excited to share that I just found out our company had a Record-Breaking 2010!  Wow, I just finished celebrating the New Year with friends and family and now it looks like I'll have to go out and celebrate some more tonight.  Anybody out and about in the Seattle, WA area this evening?  hehe~

Our website and mobile usage hit an all-time peak in December and Zillow traffic surpassed 13 Million Unique Users Per Month.  This is very exciting news.

SEATTLE, Jan. 3 – Real estate information company Zillow Inc. wrapped up 2010 with a record-breaking traffic month, which capped a year of significant business announcements and usage milestones.  Zillow logged more than 13 million unique users* in the traditionally slow real estate month of December, the most in any month since the company’s launch in 2006.

That represents year-over-year traffic growth of 77 percent.

Additionally, Zillow is now running the largest online real estate ad network in the country**, thanks to a partnership with Yahoo! Real Estate, which was announced in July.  Zillow sells real estate advertising for both sites and, beginning in the first quarter of 2011, will power all for-sale listings on Yahoo! Real Estate.  Zillow Inc.’s individual business units, Zillow.com®, Zillow Mobile and Zillow Mortgage Marketplace, all logged important milestones.

Additional milestones for 2010 include:

•    Zillow Mobile launched apps on Android and iPad in early 2010, in addition to continuing to operate the number-one real estate app on the iPhone. Consumers now look at homes 20,000 times per hour while using Zillow Mobile. The Zillow apps are the most popular real estate apps on iPhone, iPad and Android.

•    Zillow Inc. became profitable in 2010.

•    Former COO Spencer Rascoff was promoted to CEO of Zillow Inc. in September. He replaced Zillow co-founder Rich Barton, who remains with Zillow as executive chairman.

•    There are nearly 100 million homes in Zillow’s database of all homes; 4 million are for sale and more than 170,000 are for rent.

•    Zillow in September announced a partnership with Apartments.com, which brought Apartments.com’s national database of rental listings to Zillow.com and Zillow Mobile.

•    Zillow Mortgage Marketplace became Zillow Inc.’s fastest-growing business, receiving nearly 300,000 consumer loan requests per month.

•    Data from Zillow’s real estate economics arm, including the Zillow Home Value Index, was widely used by academic and government institutions during 2010. Zillow data appeared in reports by the Congressional Oversight Panel, several branches of the Federal Reserve and numerous academic institutions.

“The past year has been a monumental one for Zillow,” said Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff. “We accomplished many of our goals.  Zillow is profitable and, thanks to innovations and partnerships like the one we have with Yahoo! Real Estate, we’re an even greater resource for consumers and real estate professionals alike. We’re looking forward to celebrating our fifth anniversary in 2011 with anticipation and high hopes for the year to come.”

Now I'd love to be able to say that all this success is because I joined the Zillow team, but we all know that would be a big fib. However,  I do look forward to 2011 being a prosperous year for us all.  I'm confident that my contributions, as small as they may be will have a significant and measurable impact on next years 2011 report and year-end update.

"How's things going over at Zillow?" I'd have to say fabulous, these are very exciting times! :-)

What is Zillow? For those of you who may not know:

Zillow Inc. is a real estate information company with a marketplace where homeowners, buyers, sellers, renters, real estate agents and mortgage professionals find and share vital information about homes and mortgages. Launched in early 2006 with Zestimate® home values and data on millions of U.S. homes, Zillow has since added homes for sale and homes for rent, a directory of real estate and lending professionals, Zillow Advice, Zillow Mobile apps and Zillow Mortgage Marketplace. One of the most-visited U.S. real estate websites, with more than 13 million unique visitors per month, Zillow's goal is to help people become smarter about homes and real estate in every stage of their lives -- home buying, selling, renting, remodeling and financing.  The company is headquartered in Seattle.

* Unique users to Zillow are measured by Omniture, December 2010.
** The Zillow/Yahoo! Real Estate Network was the most-visited real estate entity (including both networks and individual websites) as measured by comScore Media Metrix Key Measures – Ranked Category, November 2010.

It's Not About Your Company - It's ALL About Your People

We just returned home from Seattle, WA where my wife and I spent 3 days and two nights at the Hotel 1000, a spectacular retro/modern hotel and spa located downtown.  We were invited to attend the Zillow Company Holiday party and I was fortunate to also attend my first Z-talk (a company meeting) which is like a state-of-the-division conference.  Man, what a diverse and intelligent group of people.

There were folks from Seattle, Iowa, Idaho, Chicago, SF and NY.... it was awesome!

I really had no idea how many people worked behind the scenes for Zillow until this past week. WOW!

Can you spot my green seat?  lol~  What an honor it was to be included at the Z-talk.  I've never seen or been surrounded by a more passionate and inspirational group of people who make up the Zillow culture and team.  It's truly a privilege to be part of this great company.  Or as Spencer would say, "a Zillowite!"  My wife is still calling me BradZilla  (thanks alot TLW)  :-)

Any company can create a business model, offer decent services and products, and just show up for work everyday, but what really turns a good company into a GREAT company?  I believe that is determined and defined by what differentiates their people, their focus, and their shared passion for their clients, potential customers, and their own success.  Always seeking to do more and to do it better.  I'm proud that Zillow sets very high standards in all arenas.

Being the new kids on the block, we were wondering what it would be like attending our first company Holiday party and social gathering?  You know, a shy and quiet kinda guy like me (yeah right) surrounded by great tech gurus and experts?  Rubbing elbows with many of those whom have made this company a technology and industry leader?

Seriously, my wife and I were treated just like family.  It was like we had always been there.

Everyone made us feel so warm and welcomed, never once did we feel out of place or in bad company.

Our take away?  No matter what you may think of any company or business out there, remember that those companies are made up of people. Real people just like you and I.  They have families, are committed to their jobs, and are loyal to their leadership.  These are just some of the people that made our stay and visit to Seattle one of the best times ever.

My wife and I want to thank the entire Zillow family for their warm and sincere welcome, their generosity and hospitality, and most of all, for making us feel like we belong.  These are some of the nicest and funnest people, we're proud to be associated with such a fine group.

We'll always extend that same warmth and hospitality to all our fellow colleagues, and our new found friends.

~ Happy Holidays ~

It's Official - Going From "A" to "Z"

Today it is official so I'm announcing my new role.  It really is going from "A" to "Z".

My thought was if I said from "A" to "Z" many of you might figure it out.  I'm sure some of you already have.  I’m excited to announce that I'm now the Industry Outreach Manager at Zillow.

Over these past few days I've spent a great deal of time with some really awesome people learning all about my new company, their culture, the products and services, but most importantly, their passion as a team for helping connect real estate professionals with consumers.

"I'm 100% confident that I am in the right place and working with the right people and company."

The relationships I've developed here in the rain mean more to me than anything.  I'm so thankful for all I've been blessed with here over the years, and I'm very enthusiastic and excited for what the future holds.  I'm also committed to bringing even more value and meaning to those relationships by sharing new and exciting ways/tools to help you get more business and maximize your efforts while spending less time and money to do it.

I'll continue to work from the greater Bay Area in California, but I'll still be mobile.  I'll be doing many of the same types of things you are used to seeing me do here on ActiveRain.  Social media and marketing training, classes and seminars, webinars, speaking at national events, and providing education and support for the many tech tools, products, and services I can offer you.

Those of you who know me know that I have a passion for sharing real estate technology, widgets, and all that tech-y and useful kinda stuff.  I have written about so many different companies and tools that can help increase your business, save you time or money, or just simplify your life.  There really are lots of choices in real estate both for agents and consumers and I'm feeling positive and confident that I've found a single solution that will serve and bring great value to both sides.

So now it's official, I'm on board, I'm part of the  Z-team and very excited!  As I continue to get adjusted, trained, and adapt to my new role, it will be difficult for me to resist the temptation to want to share everything I learn as I go along.  So I promise I won't fight it, I WILL be sharing.  :-)  I'll open some huge doors of opportunity for many of you, and create some great ways to contribute to your growth and success.

Fasten your seat-belts, hang on tight because from the "" in Activerain, to the "" in Zillow, it's going to be a fun and exciting ride!  Here's a link to my profile when you need me.  As I've said in the past, and it still holds true today, my door is always open to you and I'm looking forward to our continued growth and successes together!  :-)

The Real Estate Industry - It's not Just a Job, It's an Adventure!

I'm excited to announce that I am taking on a new role and change in the Real Estate Industry!

Over the past few years in my role as Community Manager for ActiveRain, I've learned so much and grown in so many ways.  During this time my role has included helping many thousands of people and that work has been immensely rewarding and exciting.  However, I am now moving to a new place with my career.

To all my friends at ActiveRain, a big "Thank You" for all your love, support and friendships over the past few years.  I also want to thank the staff and my good friends here inside ActiveRain for all their hard work, and for the passion that they sweat into this network each and everyday.  It's been a wonderful learning experience.  Getting to witness the growth and changes on AR has been an honor and privilege.

I feel blessed to have so many great friends and such a truly authentic extended family here.

I look forward to telling you all about this new challenge that I have accepted in the days ahead.  I'd spill the beans right now, but I have to head out the door... I'm running off to get married in a couple weeks. Then ActiveBrad's spending his honeymoon in some untold locations.  I am not leaving the AR network or all of my friends and family here, I'm just merging onto a different road up ahead and creating a new and exciting path.

So wish me luck, I'm looking forward to YOUR future as I plan to still be part of it.  :-)

The rest of the scoop coming soon ...to be continued

No matter the path you travel, make a difference in the world and enjoy the Journey...

The Virtual Real Estate Brokerage and Office - WEB 3.0

The Virtual Real Estate Brokerage and Office of the Future Today! - WEB 3.0

What does the future Real Estate Brokerage and Office really look like?  If you decide to read on, it may change your perception of what the "Virtual Real Estate World" could look like in the future.  While Secondlife is the Internets largest user-created, 3D virtual world community, and used primarily for Social Networking, eXp Realty has taken this same concept, and created a Business Model where the Real Estate Brokerage and Office is 100% Virtual.  They are using the invisible walls of the Internet as their "Brick and Morter" office.

Their Business Model is defined as "The Worlds First Fully Immersive WEB 3.0. Real Estate Brokerage."

Last month, while at REBarCamp in San Diego, I got to meet and spend some time with Dale Kreiser, eXp REalty's Washington State Broker.  He shared what their company was doing, and how well it was working for them.  When I returned to the office, I did some research on their company and their site.  I was "Blown Away" at what Glenn Sanford - Founder and CEO and their team have created!  Could this really be the Real Estate Office and Business Model of the Future for Brokerages and even the smaller Mom & Pop offices?

Here's a video clip from a discussion held at that REBarCamp in San Diego.  The topic?  What does the Real Estate Brokerage of the future look like?  It's an interesting discussion with Tom Ferry, Stefan Swanepoel, Wendy Forsythe, Sherry Chris, Dale Kreiser and others.  What is the "New" strategy or tactic?  Here's a hint of what you're about to see; The future is HERE now!

I've a strong suspicion that these guys may be onto something here...

So I called Dale and asked him for a "Virtual Tour" of their "Virtual Office."  He and Glenn agreed to let me share that tour with you via this recorded video.  For me personally, this was really the next best thing to actually being there.  I felt like I was there.  Now anyone that knows me well, also knows that I love all the new technology that is being introduced to our Industry, but I am also a practical person and want to be certain that this stuff really works.  Don't just tell me it does....SHOW ME!!

This video is a bit longer than I wanted, but I edited out over 40 minutes of some really great stuff I wish I could have shared with you all, maybe another time. I would encourage you to watch the entire thing, I'd hate for you to miss any of this one. Sit back in that comfy chair of yours, relax, and enjoy this first ever virtual office tour...

Is this the way some Real Estate Company's and Brokerages will operate in the future?  Yes, here's one already.  Are these guys way ahead of their time?  Maybe, but after today's tour, I realized that just talking with them about it, and then visiting their website was no comparison and nothing like "virtually being there!"  I had no clue how well this was all put together.  It was nothing short of interesting, fascinating, and awesome!

The Virtual Real Estate Brokerage and Office - WEB 3.0  So tell me what you're thinking at this moment...
