The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

The ActiveRain Point System

The ActiveRain Point System

ActiveRain awards members points based on participation and their individual involvement within the network and community.  While there is a much more complicated and technical explanation of how the point system works, this post is to provide you a general overview of how points are earned and distributed that to ALL ActiveRain members.

ActiveRain points are earned based on a members individual activities and efforts. Points are accumulated over the duration of the Calendar week which "Starts Monday morning at 12:00am Central Time, and Ends Sunday night at 11:59pm Central Time."

The following are some ways you can earn points and move up the "Featured Member" ladder in your Local Area.

  • 200 Points for each Blog Post
(Max 10 per Week) (50 Word Minimum Required)

  • 25 Additional Points when Post is added to Channels with a Topic

  • 400 Points for Featured Post on ActiveRain.com
(Excludes Posts Featured in ActiveRain Groups)

  • 25 Points For Each Comment
(Max 10 Per Day) (Comments on Your Own Posts Excluded)

  • 25 Points for Each Reblogged Post
(Max 10 Per Week - These do not Include Your Own Posts)

  • ActiveRain Profile Points
(Building Your AR Profile will Build points)

  • Received Comments on Blog Posts
(No Blog Post to exceed 475 pts.)

  • 100 Points - Logging In To ActiveRain Each Day
(This applies 7 days a week)

  • 250 Points When Someone Accepts Your AR Invitation
(Must Sign Up under Members Invite Code)

  • 10% of Total Points Earned By New Members Invited By You
(IE: Invited Member Earns 1000 pts. - You Earn 100 Pts.)

  • ActiveRain and Member Approved Contests - Points Will Vary
(These show up as Bonus Points in your Point Summary)

  • Staff Awarded Bonus Points - These are issued by the AR staff
    (Member Humanitarian, Paying It Forward,
    Helping Others etc.)

Weekly Point Scenario: The potential of points available per week, per member would be as follows: 1750 for max comments, 2000 for max Blog posts, 700 for logging in daily, 250 for adding to Channels/Topics, and 250 for max ReBlogged posts.  The Weekly potential of points would be 4950 (this does not include featured posts, comments received, invitation and percentage points, contests, and staff awarded bonus points.)

Point Disclaimer: The Points System created by the ActiveRain Network was developed and implemented to motivate, inspire, and reward members for their participation and involvement within the community. These points are subject to change at the discretion of the ActiveRain Mgmt. Team, with or without cause, warning, or notice.

Brad,  This post is informative.  The idea of points is a good one, even if you can't fly anywhere with them.

Brad - There's a point system?!?  If only I had known...

Posted by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (512-796-7653) (Austin Texas Homes, LLC) 8 months ago

Brad,

Probably one of the most debated features on AR.  Usually the people wanting to climb the latter wanting more and the people at the top saying they don't matter (although I have yet to find someone at the top willing to give up their spot).

I like the point system, it adds a little fun and competition to they system, even though they ultimately have little sway with consumers.

Brad thanks for the info.

Posted by Tammie White Franklin TN Homes For Sale (Keller Williams Realty) 8 months ago

Brad ~~ even though several folks say they don't care about the points, I really don't believe it.  They serve a lot of purposed and I think the overwhelming majority of people like the poins.  I think the comments would cease without the points.

Hi Brad, while I did know how most of how points are awarded, there were a couple of things in there that I didn't know. So, thanks for the post.

But, what's really surprising is that a "body" could collect 5,000 pts per week! WOW! If I were here "just for the points," that'd be an extremely motivating factor. Except, I've learned so much from being here, and gained so much confidence in myself from AR members, that there aren't enough points to compensate for that! Thank you!

I wondered too why the points on a blog stay the same whether you have 20 comments or 40 but it is still only 325. Is it because of the 10 word minimum? And I got an email saying a blog was a featured post but I didn't get any points for that.  Just curious.

The point gap in the ActiveRain community is getting too large and is causing unrest between the haves and the have nots.

I think we need a Progressive Point Tax to even the playing field.  If everyone had the same amount of points we'd all be happier.  We could all get out of this rat race for points and actually go out and be good, productive real estate people.

So Brad I think since I've contributed quite a bit over the last 4 yrs...I think if I'm correct you owe me an additional ...50,000 points. And also don't we get more points if we are soooooo good looking? I think then you'll need to reward me with more! Oh and by the way...can't you write something interesting instead of always about the points? You should be writing how wonderful you're wife is for making you lunch last week!...lol

Brad-Points?  I found out about points after I'd done a few posts.  I saw that some Rainers were #1 in a certain area and I thought "Gee, how do I move up the ladder?"  Well, duh, I finally looked under the familiar faces I'd been reading and noticed numbers.  Hm-m  the light bulb finally went off.

Thanks for the points and thanks for the post!

Brad - The points for logging in each day are fairly new aren't they?  I didn't see any points for this until August this year.  I think it is a good idea as it rewards people for the habit of logging onto AR each day.  Once you are on AR, it's hard to slip away without reading one or two posts, and then...well, you know.  Smart move!

Katerina - oh do tell...
Jane - Before and Now? I didn't forget, that's just a big project. :-)
Leslie - though others have written about it already, great idea for a post.
Lenn - Hmm... wonder how we could work that out? Great idea! lol~
Renee - it's actually 475pts. and that's the max ANY post can receive now, comments and all.
Fernando - great question. If an older post has more than 475pts. and you edit, it will drop back to 475.
Peggy - I'll have to look into that one for you. Sometimes it takes a bit for the pt. hamsters to make their rounds.
Roseann - I think you'll find those posts scattered all through-out the "rain" community.  :-)
Neal - members like you could cause a Natl Point Debt.  haha~ Yes, the lunch was awesome, you're right!!
Gail - the points for logging in each day were recently added, yes.  I haven't seen any complaints yet.
John - points for Localism photos got way out of hand.  We lost quality for quantity by point envy. No point.
Gregory - the music in TLW's head doesn't stay there long. It's shared in comments all over the network. lol~
Ricky - featured posts are selected by our AR staff moderators. They are always looking for features.
Rob - points by staff are given for good deeds, kind gestures, helpful random acts of kindness etc. :-))

Posted by Angelica Blatt -CRS, e-pro, GRI, ABR Monterey Peninsula Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty - Monterey Peninsula Realtor#01248430) 8 months ago

Hi Angelica - I think it just got out of hand.  Too many folks were linking to every page of their website, in some cases hundreds, so we had to put an end to that one.  It's still good to have your Blog linked though, this was a concept we were trying to promote and inspire by giving points.  Having your websites, blogs, and social networks all connected and tied together is most certainly NOT "pointless"  :-))

Brad,

Usually my blogs gain 200 points, but today one of my blogs earned 216 - this was a non photo blog.  And today I posted a blog with 8 photographs and that earned 200.  I thought photos brought more points.  What's that weird 216 number?

Mel

Posted by melody salazar (Salazar Staging & Custom Interiors) 8 months ago

Hi Melody - neither the pictures in a Blog post nor the amount of them has anything to do with points.  The reason you have more points in one than the other is due to comments made on your post by other members.

Posted by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Manager (ActiveRain) 8 months ago

Still confused since I received the points before any comments were made.  On other blogs where I've received many comments, the blog entry points do not change.

mel

Hey Mel - sometimes it takes those point hamsters a while to get out of their running wheels and make their rounds to each member and distribute points from all the various ways they can be earned (listed above)  I'll put the "whip" to em, but I think they take Sundays off.  :-))

Posted by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Manager (ActiveRain) 8 months ago

Chad

Posted by Chad Elliot (Keller Williams Integrity Northwest - The Hennepin Group) 8 months ago

Hey Chad - I checked out your Blog and your last few posts are less than 50 words.  They have to be 50 words or more for points:

200 Points for each Blog Post
(Max 10 per Week) (50 Word Minimum Required)

I also checked out your points summary page and it is accurate based on your activity.  I would also suggest upgrading to a rainmaker account so that your posts will get public exposure instead of just members only.  If you need any assistance, let me know.  :-))

Brad, Do we get points for blog hijacking? (or dancing with myself) Sorry, I just couldn't resist the pun.

Now to get serious you should ask the powers to be if they can have a points structure like Mafia Wars. Where if you blog or comment for so many days you get bonus points?

Also please don't hold it against me, that I was the one to give blogging Bertha a platform to express herself. I swear I did not know that day would open pandoras box.

Brad, I have noticed I am not receiving points on all my comments even though I have not gone over ten for that day. Do you know why this might be?

Posted by Blake Rickels - Knoxville TN Homes (Pinnacle Real Estate) 8 months ago

Blake - sometimes it takes a bit for point distribution, also, be sure you're logged into AR when making comments on others posts. Lastly. points are not given for making comments on your own posts. :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Manager (ActiveRain) 8 months ago

It actually did it again today. I left a total of three comments todat not counting this one and only have points for 2 of them. I was logged in and it has been about an hour since my last comment. Is it normal for it to take longer than an hour to distribute points?  Thanks for your quick response and helping me out!

Posted by Blake Rickels - Knoxville TN Homes (Pinnacle Real Estate) 8 months ago

Yes Blake, it could take longer.  I know points are important, but your content in both Blog posts and comments is far more important and should be your major focus in connecting with others and growing your relationships and business.  The points will come in time my friend.

Posted by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Manager (ActiveRain) 8 months ago

Hi Brad..I have an Inquiry about our Points,,before I respond I would like your imput too..The Questions is...Why does every-one care about points so much?

Posted by Victoria Oak Bay Realtor Fred Carver 250-598-2963 for Victoria Oak Bay Homes (Re/Max Camosun Oak Bay & Surrounding Area Real Estate) 8 months ago

Fred - great question. The unofficial answer: points rewards drive our members to create content. Whether they realize it or not, by building up and acheiving those points, they are also building a GREAT LIBRARY of content and resources which WILL ultimately result in growing Business and Relationships.  Kinda reminds me of when I use to get Bazooka Joe bubble gum for cleaning my room!  :-))

I think members also want to appear as the top "Featured Member" for their areas.  Then there's also the idea that one day, maybe members will be able to do something more with points that we just haven't yet divulged???   :-O

Posted by Dave Roberts (Healdsburg Sotheby's International Realty) 8 months ago

Dave - sounds like one of the AR staff members is out delivering "Contest" points from a previous contest, or it could be the AR elves giving out early Holiday gifts??  lol~  Most likely it's contest point distribution day.   :-)

Posted by Dan Haggerty (Keller Williams Realty) 7 months ago

Dan - points are not awarded for posting to Localism. Comment points should be awarded for up to 10 a day. Sometimes it takes a bit for the point hamsters to get around to ALL the members here, but they normally do a pretty good job.  If you feel you're not getting all your comment points, send me a link to the comments (not getting points) and I'll see that it gets taken care of. Thanks. :-)

Barry - there are no points for links, we haven't done points for links for a long time now. Sorry.  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Manager (ActiveRain) 7 months ago

I think the points system is misleading. It implies that there is some benefit to accumulating points, other than the usual benefits of simply being active.

From what I can tell there are no benefits. Posts like this about "points" tell us how to get them, but not why we should bother.

A lot of people seem to think it is fun accumulating points. To each his/her own I guess. I'd rather play golf.

Posted by Rick Hendershot (BlogEasy for Real Estate Agents) 6 months ago

Rick - hitting a hole in one is overated.  Would love to hear the benefits, value, and business that golf gets you?  ROFLMAO!!!~ :-)
Seriously, Points are for YOUR own good.  They are awarded to members for Building their Blog, a resource library (helping themselves of course) which when done properly, will bring them business for years to come.  Enjoy your game.  :-))
