Google Chrome Evolves - A Computer Operating System?

Google Chrome Evolves - A Computer Operating System ...and it makes a whole lotta sense!!

It's been an adventure watching Internet Browsers evolve into what they are today. I started with Internet Explorer, then realized that Mozilla Firefox was much faster and more forgiving, now I am seriously checking out Google Chrome.  I will still use the others, but just like this video explains, the world, and the computers in it are changing rapidly.

Can a browser really make a difference in the time it saves you or the frustration it can create?  What about your computer operating system? Google felt strongly enough that yes, it can, so much so, that they have created and are now introducing an entire new operating system for computers.  This video was released on November 18th, 2009 and makes some very interesting points about how we use the Internet today and why they've jumped into this arena.

Once you've watched it, you'll most likely agree that Google is really honing in on "What The Internet Consumer" needs, and how they can deliver the tools and products to make life on the Internet simpler, faster and more efficient.  Now they're going to try and do the same with your computer operating system.  The Google Browser and Operating System may very well be the dominating tools of the Internet and PC's in the very near future.  I'm just sayin....

For the MAC users like myself, Google Chrome is still in development, and the operating system will probably not be a replacement for the MAC OS anytime soon. My MAC is already "screamin" fast!

Hi Brad: I use the Chrome Browser every day. I like it. :)

I'm a believer.  I have seen the future, and its name is Google.  I use Chrome everyday too.  (Most especially to access Google Wave.)

Cheryl - I'm a waver too, but not connected to anyone yet and feeling a bit lonely.  I know you're the pro, can you show me the "Wave Ropes?" If you get a chance, let me know how to connect with others (like you) so I can get underway "waving!"  Thanks. :-)

Hi Brad...I love Google's Stuff, I've been using Google Mail for over a year and forward my email to my Outlook. My Spam fall way off when I switched too.

I tried Google Chrome, but for some reason my Computer rejected it...maybe because I'm using Exp Pro, who knows.

Thanks for sharing with us all.

The last time I booted up my PC (months ago) I think it took 3-4 minutes to load everything in its entirety. Since 98% of what I do is on the Internet, I really like where the Google developement team is going with this.  I just keep my seatbelt fastened because the speed at which google travels is much faster than the load time of my old PC.  lol~

Google Chrome OS Open Source Project Announcement - watch this if you want to hear what Google is announcing about the New OS. It is about a year away from launch, but this will captivate you and answer questions you don't even know you have. :-)

This is what I call "thinking outside the box!".  Now that the idea is here, it makes you wanna say "Duh!!!".  Thanks Brad.

This is why Microsoft is so worried by these guys.  Google may have started with search, but they are not going to stay there.

I still have problems with Chrome working with some secure websites... Too bad everyone doesn't realize that Microsoft is the problem.

Now that is out of the way...

It is certainly an interesting concept, and I am curious as to where this is going.

Brad: I am using all 3 browsers...if one won't load fast enough...then I switch. Talk about online addiction??? 3 different browsers !! I've noticed my foxfire takes "forever" to load....and I now use the Goggle Chrome first. I don't have any idea what a MAC user goes through...I gotta hang with my PC.
Posted by Christine Bohn, Gainesville, FL Realtor® (RE/MAX Professionals) over 2 years ago

I use all 3 myself too, have to use IE for the MLS and certain other secure sites, then Firefox for AR because I use ScribeFire for both writing posts and commenting, then Chrome when I feel like smoking the internet up! I wish they had a scribefire type of addon, then I would be saying goodby to Firefox, as much as I like it.

I can't wait till Google OS comes out and I can get a computer that just works on the Internet.  I have other things I will still need to do offline, but I can use another computer for that.  I am using Chrome now for about a week and it works pretty good.  I have tried to download Firefox, but can't get it to even open so it is conflicting with something on my computer.  Who knows what though.  I tried re-downloading it several times.  I am still waiting for my invite to Wave.  I really believe it will be the platform for our business almost exclusively in 2 years.

Brad,

Competition keeps all the service providers sharp. Google has the resources to make a dent in operating system provisioning.

Brad, Thanks for the information. I have Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. I switch between them, but the reviews and my experience have shown that Safari and Opera are faster than Chrome and all are much faster than Explorer. I think I will pay more attention to Chrome because of the potential of Chrome OS. On another subject, I just tried to spell-check and there is no tool bar above my comments. I have noticed in the past that most of the time I get tool bars so I can insert, preview, bold, spell-check, etc. But sometimes it does not show up (on the same page at different times). I have tried refreshing the page and it works sometimes. Do you know what causes this and if there is a fix?
Posted by Gary Coles Latin America Real Estate (Venture Realty International) over 2 years ago

Gary - I have noticed that myself on occasion, I'll send in a ticket to see if we can figure it out. The toolbar is here now, but it wasn't for like the first 10 seconds or so. I'll look into it.  Ya think it might be one of your browsers???   ROFL~  Just kidding!  :-))

Brad, unfortunately I can't install anything on my PC laptop at work and I use a mac at home. Looks like I'm going to wait. In the meantime, I love firefox and Opera and my preferred browsers. Thanks for the news.

BTW- did you get a chance to put in your two cents about making activerain into a verb? I'm sure it's been done, but I didn't find any posts about it. So, I wrote a fun post with an open invitation to see what people come up with. I'd love to get your feedback. Here's the post: "Let's make activerain into a verb like google. Here's how we can all do it."

Hi Brad,

Wow, this sounds fasinating!  Hey, if your computer just worked online soley, how would you protect your files and saved documents, etc?  Would all of your work stored on your hard drive just be stored online instead?  Any issue with security?  I'm sorta scratching my head over here...

Brad, thanks for sharing.  I'm a Mac user too, but unfortunately had to split my hard drive so I could run some virtual PC (Internet Exlorer) to run my MLS.  ARGH!!

I like Firefox too!

Brad, I don't know what your experience has been this far but I had horrible experiences with Google Chrome several months ago. A ton of programs would not run on it and it was a disaster trying to uninstall it.  Maybe they have fixed the kinks but it has a lot back then.

Damon - I use a MACBOOK Pro, so no Chrome for me, but on my PC, it seemed to work just fine.  I'm sure there may have been some bugs back then, but hopefully they got alot of that worked out.  I hear pretty good things about it.  :-)

This morning, I turned on my PC (an HP with Windows Vista) and it took almost 7 minutes to boot up completely.  While I waited, I turned on my MACBOOK Pro, and was typing this comment within 40 seconds.  :-O   Once you go MAC, you never go BACK!!  lol~

Extremely Interesting Brad. Though as I read I must confess I do not understand how loading the operating system is avoided when you turn on the computer?

Herb - Google OS WILL be an operating system.  When they launch it in a year or so, it will make perfect sense. Keep your eyes and ears out, while google is working on this, I bet Microsoft will be re-thinking their operating system as well. :-)

Brad, I read your blog and viewed the video and downloaded Chrome---was very excited. However, I can't go there as my default browser just yet. When I tried to enter a new listing in our St. Augustine MLS (Innovia) I had major problems. The Jacksonville (Northeast Florida) MLS (FLEXMLS) worked just fine. Also, when I tried to print from Innovia, I received a tiny box. I just got a Motorola Cliq which is Android (Google) based, so I am moving into the world of Google. I, like many, have used Google for searches, but not for much else. Trying to sync my Agent Office with the Cliq is a major process which may force me to Google mail over Outlook. Currently must sync Agent Office contacts and calendar with Outlook. Then export Outlook contacts to Google mail and Outlook to Google Calendar (2 steps). Looking forward to learning more. Thanks for your informative blogs.

Barbara - I totally understand. Many of the MLS sites and others will only function properly using IE. They'll need to catch up at some point in time though.  At least you understand that you CAN use multiple browsers on your computer regardless of the Defaults required by some of these other sites.  :-)  Google will most certainly be a "dominate" player in all aspects of Internet Business long into the future.

Posted by Brad Andersohn (Zillow - Outreach Manager) over 2 years ago

Brad, things never ever stay the same - except you and me of course! ;-) Seriously, as soon as you figure out where it is - it moves!!! ;-)

I pretty much stay with Firefox, but have IE, Safari and Chrome available as well. How's that for thinkin ahead?

Brad, I love Google.  I have been using Google voice to forward all our calls between 3 phones, Google Docs to get documents to my clients quick and easy, Google Calendar and address book so that they are real-time on my Mac, Blackberry, and Ipod.  I despise having to synch my phone to my computer and this works great for me.  I haven't tried Chrome yet because I am addicted to Omni, but I did make the switch back to Firefox in order to use Scribefire - thanks to your other post.  I still have to run VM Fusion so I can get to our antiquated MLS that won't develop to anything but Internet Explorer for the agent side.  Once they arrive in the 21st century, I can eliminate Windows all together and will be a better person for it.  I can't wait for Chrome OS for the other Windows based family computers!
