The ActiveRain Manual - NEW & IMPROVED
When I started creating the first AR Manual, it was so that I could find posts I'd written to share with others I had invited, those new to AR, or anyone who just wanted to know more specifics about how to use different areas and tools offered by AR. Creating a "manual" back then was more for my own use than anything else. It was an easy way to keep organized and find posts quickly.
3 Years later, the AR manual has evolved into a resource library that now anyone can use. The OLD version, (on the left) was not something I was really proud of, but it served its purpose for the time being.
Today, I'm announcing The NEW ActiveRainManual.com. Tons of tutorials, tips and how-to's.
Both of these manuals were built using WIX. I really like their site and how easy it is to create and update content. For the new manual, WIX stepped up and offered to help out. The goal was to create a site that would be cleaner, more organized and professional, easier to search, and that would save members time. WIX provided the platform and the tools, and Kris Fitzgerald helped me design and set it all up.
These guys were awesome, very professional, really fun to work with, and I endorse them 100%.
WIX sites are FREE, their templates are flashy, professional, easy to work with, and their customer service is exceptional. Check out the new AR Manual, (I upgraded the my account on WIX to remove the ads and use my own domain) hopefully this will be helpful to AR members. WIX also added an ActiveRain Promo for AR members only, you can get the same discount and support they gave me. Most of all, I think you'll like the new manual over the old one, I've upgraded it, removed a lot of the clutter, and cleaned the place up nice for you. Take a peek...
Ross & Brandon from WIX, and Kris and I are pretty excited and proud of the new AR manual. Enjoy!

Brad - this looks pretty cool. I can see some other applications, besides your stellar AR Manual. We all appreciate so much all that t=you share with us!!
Jeff
Brad always thinking...trying to improve the mouse trap huh? You could not just leave it alone and let it ride but had to tinker, reinvent. Good for you! Less and less folks reading manuals though and want to be "fed" , shown information with video. Get on camera, all the active rain staff and explain each and every crevice and update them as needed. Keep up the good work.
Hi Brad,
A real handy item.
Thank you
Wow Brad...Thanks Newbies and Old Members alike will want this great resource at their finger tips. I'm booking marking it for sure...now how can I organize my book marks...mmm
Brad You Rock....Thanks for your continued support to us all in the Rain !
Brad, thanks for the heads up, this is alot better system my bookmark system that I currently using, there is just so much info on AR that I bookmark stuff and take a day now and then to go back and really learn the material. Thanks Again for making my life easier
Hi Brad:
I downloaded the toolbar - I'm sure this will be another super feature to boost AR to new heights. The manual is something we could all benefit from.
Thanks!
Thanks Brad. A great resource we can all use.
Brad,
That is so cool....I think this is going to be a great resource...and probably a great time saver for you too....
This should be required reading for new members...and old ones alike!
I love this informational book!
Brad - Wow What a new and modern look. I'll have to dig into this... Can you dig it? Bookmarked....
Brad: This... as can be expected from you... is excellent. I will add a link to this post to my collection of AR posts that I send to various Newbies as I greet them when I notice they are making their first posts. Thanks so much.
Wow, brad.. this rocks!!! Nobody will be blogging today... we'll all be reading the new manual! thanx
Brad, thank you so much for the new improved AR Manual! It will be a great help to oldies and newbies alike!
Brad ---- I'm really looking forward to taking a look at the manual -- thanks to you and the WIX guys.

QUESTION TO BRAD: We are going to start doing Active Rain training sessions in the office . Any hints or tips on how to use the manual to support this? Are there any "training" templates we could get from you? Can I wrangle a trip somewhere warm to learn more? THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Leslie - we can setup some custom training classes at the ActiveRain University just for your office. Give me a call and I will show you how we can incorporate the manual, the help toolbar, and these custom online webinar classes for your folks. I'm in Arizona right now but will be back in the office tomorrow afternoon. My number is on my AR profile page. Thanks. :-))
Brad, yet another great way to help us find the information we need. Thanks for this very helpful tool and also for turning us on to WIX. I'll have to check that out.
Thanks, Brad!
I stumbled upon this manual the over day and I love it.
Thank you Brad for this wonderful tool! Looks like I have to get busy reading! :)
Brad - is there an issue with IE8 for the manual or is it just the fact that I am on wireless (slow) as it did not load for me. Is there such a thing as a minimum recommended download speed? Does it run better in Firefox?
Of course patience may be a virtue I am one of those who does not stay with a site that does not download quickly.
Thanks for all your work. I use the manual daily.
Thanks Brad
This looks interesting..is this a free site ??? I just glanced at this before going into a closing..hoping to get an answer when I return..thanks Brad for another wonderful tool.
What a wonderful idea Brad! No doubt this will be a grand one to help out the members.... Now when someone emails me for info....I'll send them this link :)
Hi Kathy - It is a Flash site so you will need the most recent version of Adobe Flash Playerf or the best results. I always prefer Firefox over IE because of the speed, ease of use, and it's a much more forgiving browser. Also make sure you check for IE browser updates if you want to continue using IE. Dial up and slow internet access will definitely have an impact on load times and speed of any internet site.
BTW - I mentioned the new Manual and the "Flashy" WIX site at RainCamp Denver so I thought I better get this post up and out there. :-)
Brad - This is just what I needed. Thank you very much.
Great Brad. It's great to find all these resources in one place.
What a fabulous resource! Thank you.
Helpful Hannah - the wix sites are free, I upgraded the manual on wix (for a fee) so I could host it at ActiveRainManual.com. They gave me a great discount deal which they'll do the same for all AR members as well. You can still create some cool sites and flashy pages on Wix and yes, they are for free. :-)
Wow, I'm shocked !!!!!!! All this time I thought AR was like my I-Phone, NO BOOK (*L*) !!!!!!!
Very cool, I am excited, I will bookmark and download your tool bar!
It's SWEET Brad!!! Very easy to navigate and looks sharp too! I can't imagine how much time this project took but a big thank you from me.
Wow, this is really going to come in handy in the future. Thanks for your efforts. I'll be referring to it a lot in the future.
Cynthia - thanks!! :-)
It's taken me 3 years to get it to where it is right now. What's really cool is that I will be able to add and update it in the future with new ideas, tools, tips, AR tutorials etc. I have a few more posts to add already this week.
If you don't find what you need or are looking for about AR in the manual, please let me know and I'll create a post and add it.
Thanks, again, for all your help! Keep on rockin'!
Brad- where would we all be without your efforts??? I'm checking out the manual and WIX. You must truly live, breath, eat, drink ActiveRain.
PS just checked it out quickly before the next Webinar and love it. Great colors and easy to use. Now I don't have to go back over all of your old posts to search for something.
Brad...
I'm going to have a look ASAP. And I'm also going to check out the WIX tool!
Brad thank you for your quick and speedy response you are the BEST ..I know this will be an awesum site
...and here I thought I'd died and gone to heaven with the AR toolbar!!!!
Thanks for this great tool.
Love the new tool bar, esp the radio feature!!! Thanks Brad!!!
Appreciate the support, as always, Brad. Thanks much.
WOW how cool is this. Great info... Thanks
I'll be downloading the tool bar asap.
Brad:
I'm pretty new here so this is going to be a HUGE help! THANK YOU!
Mike
Brad thanks so much if anyone needs help in these areas it is me for sure . I will be doing home work next week in this
Excellent. Hopefully you'll have a tutorial on linking. I know how to do it in my blog but not on my profile.
Hi Brad, this is great to have all this info in one place. Do I have to save this to favorites or will it be on a tab on the AR site?
Also I noticed while reading it that you are giving the tutorial on how to add photos to the sidebar of the Localism site. I haven't been able to upload photos or use the map for a year now using IE.
When I questioned it I was told to use Firefox but I can't get it to work even with Firefox. Have you checked yourself lately to see if it is working? It was such a great tool and I was using it for many of my local neighborhoods until it's demise.
Awesome, Brad! I'm continually amazed at the outstanding support you guys give us - - and very appreciative. Thanks.
Have a great day!
Mike

Howdy and evenen there Brad
Looken mighty fine there, I check out the manusl and WIX.
Darn, now I can't be a rebel and go against the rules. But as Detective Murtaugh said in Lethal Weapon, I getting to old for that s....
Thanks everyone for all the great comments and love, you're all the BEST! You make my job and adventure here on AR the funnest and most rewarding career I've ever had!! You've all helped me over the past 3 years just as much as I have helped you, so thanks. :-)
Brad, I love the manual. Thanks for the time and effort.
Thanks for the reference guide. It is a great accomplishment for AR.
Brad, this manual is awesome, you have done yet another stellar job for all of us here on AR. Thank you!
And you just don't know how timely this is, I am going to get a few more websites up and running, this might just be the place I want to use. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You have repeatedly improved my info and experience with your blogs, Brad. Best part: I enjoy your writing. What's the tv saying? "I not only work here, I shop here!" Quite applicable.
Thanks, Brad.
Brad,
Very strong. This is the mother of all AR manuals. Newbies, and veterans too, will find asnwers to their questions and puzzled looks here.
Wow---nice manual Brad. Thanks for taking the time to do this for the community.
Connie - I will do a post on Linking and cover topics like Anchor text and how to best use the linking features. Great suggestion, thank you. FYI - linking works on your profile page the same as it does on your Blog. The profile even has more editing tools than the Blog post or comment toolbar. You'll notice a font style and size option on the profile pages toolbar.
Jenny - no need to bookmark or save this post or the manual, just remember ActiveRainManual.com. Regarding your photos on Localism, I would suggest adding them to your posts instead which show up on your Localism profile. The upload feature is still under review until we best figure out how to manage it. As you're probably aware, not everyone is a photographer and some of the photos that were ending up on Localism were more self promotional, advertising, nothing to do with the local areas etc. and no way humanly possible for us to monitor them. That is just not a process that can be automated unfortunately.
We'll figure out a good solution that works for everyone, but until we do, I would create your Hyper-local posts with photos and images, that way each person will be responsible for their own content and pictures and we won't have to spend our days searching and removing photos that are .... well let's just say, suggestive or less than appropriate. :-)
I just came across WIX last night, nice site. Thanks for combining all the info., will definetely come in handy.
Brad, I look forward to perusing the new Manual & checking out WIX too. Thanks so much!
Are you building a spaceship for inter galactic travel, Brad because you keep coming up with these amazing new products?
I can not wait to use it.
Paul
Geez Brad, this is AWESOME! I referred a lot to the "old" AR manual when I first got here. I'm looking forward to exploring the new one as well! THANK YOU for all you do for AR.....the knowledge you freely share with us is invaluable.
I'm just curious, though.....do you ever SLEEP?? Yikes! :)
Thanks again for all of your hard work.
Best,
Coleen
Looks awesome! This is an awesome resource for all of us here. Cool to learn about WIX too.
That looks awesome and chalk full of good information. The newbies won't have to "trial and error" like I did almost 4 years ago!!
Brad ~ Thanks, I really need this and can't wait to read it!
Brad - Thank you to you and all of those who made this happen, for all of your time and effort. For some reason though, the colors showed up on the page, and no words. Anyone else have this issue?
Brad, this is amazing. I only wish it was in print so I could read it and apply it better. All the best information packed into a great website.
Brad, this should help us all, quite a bit! Thank you!
Hi Brad. It's great that you have revised and updated it. ~ Lana
Brad, are you gifted with days that are longer than 24 hours? How do you manage to pack as much into a day, a week, a month... that yo do? Thanks for all that you do for us and the manual looks great.
Wish I had it several years ago. You're making it too easy we need to suffer.
Brad - A great idea to have a manual since it has been cumbersome to try and find a particular post otherwise.
I'm planning on reading the New Manual this weekend. Thanks for your hard work!
Thanks Brad, I didn't know ActiveRain had a manual, I'll definitely check it out.
What a great tool you have created Brad - This can be useful to so many
I cannot wait to read through this.... Maybe there is some updates on Localism in there:) hint hint... The site looks great, on my way!
thanks for the one stop place to go for information -- I look forward to diving in to the detail
Wow Brad, this is amazing. We are so big now and yet it takes most newbies a long time to understand how to do things on AR.
This would be a great resource to pop up, after someone joins or a week later.
You're the best!
Brad,
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is very useful information and I am excited to learn more about the benefits of AR and how to use it in my business!
Marianne
Nice going Brad ~ the manual is without a doubt going to be a very useful tool for everyone on AR. WIX I'll look into next week. There's a lot of potential for use for REALTORS isn't there?
WOOO-HOOO, Brad! I've added the AR Manual to my favorite links and look forward to getting smarter. Thanks.
WOOO-HOOO, Brad! I've added the AR Manual to my favorite links and look forward to getting smarter. Thanks.
And now the fun really starts - great stuff Brad - thanks for all that you do! Reblogged
Awesome! I will definitely check it out. I can't believe I didn't notice before you were from Fairfield - so HI neighbor!
I love the idea Brad...I just spend a bit of time on it and got 2 proxy error messages...
Brad...Consider it book marked, there are many times in the wee hours of the morning (or Night) that I just can't get things to work...a quick refresher or tutorial would be great.
Brad
Very cool. It looks awesome and easier to use just to start. The old one was a bit clunky - great info, but we like the newer technology.
Do you guys ever sleep? I heard you yesterday on Mike Mueller's Facebook Fan Page Webinar and you are always doing cool stuff. Love the AR University concept too!
Thanks for all you do! All the best, Michelle
...it just keeps getting better !
I think I have checked in with this tutorial a few dozen times over this past year !
Cheers B-Rad !!!
sorry for not commenting back sooner, I had to get some sleep! lol~ :-))
Brad,
What a great resource to put together and make available. Thanks for the hard work. :)
Steve
WOW Fred, thanks!! I love the "tax" idea... thanks for your kind and very thoughtful comment~ :-)
....I can smell that soil now.....
Someone just sent me an email with this graphic and said, "Hey Brad, Look what I just found, did you know there's an ActiveRain Manual?" I'm totally laughing my arse off right now... :-))
Be sure to check out some of the other cool Real estate related sites that have been created by others on WIX.
Hey Brad - Did I join AR at the right time or what?? - but then I'd have to say to anyone who's HERE - come on down! AR is the wikipedia of real estate marketing.
Hi Brad - You've got a lot of ideas packed into this manual. Is WIX content searcharble?
The manual is broken down into categories John, people don't know what to search for if they don't know what they're looking for. If you want to search WIX? Yes, it's searchable. If you wanted to search the manual, I haven't added a search tool but may look into that now that you mention it. Thanks.
Brad, looks great. Thanks for the hard work you have put into this manual.
Brad ~ This is awsome to have all this in one place and no more searching through your blogs. Thanks for all your hard work you put into this site to help us be better!
ROCK OUT BRAD! I have this bookmarked for newbs. One of my friends who is due to have a baby any day from now till raincamp is disappointed she is missing it. Trying to round up the troops for ya ;)
Brad: The new manual is a great tool for newbies and oldies, THANKS! You are always keeping us so up to date on Active Rain.
Yay,Ithink folks have gotten tired of mr asking questions like hey how did you do or where did you find.... Now I can get it all in one place and I also love the AR toolbar!! Thanks Brad
Wow! I wish that was around when I first started here. There are things in there everyone can learn from. I am going to mention it on the newbie Side bar. You are still incredible!!
Karen - thank you so much, I remember signing up and joining the newbie group and finding so many great posts and tutorials there. That was the beginning of my new endeavor and the starting point of my new career here at ActiveRain. Thanks for creating the newbie group, the value of that group brings more benefit to new members than any other I know of. YOU are still incredible!! :-))
Brad,
I look forward to using the manual. Previously, I relied on the "search" Active Rain on Google feature, to find things. This reference looks like it will be a big help. Thanks.
Thanks a million for the AR manual...and for the tip about WIX. I'm setting up a website using their resources right now, and it is terrific! Easy, good-looking, fast...and the price is certainly right!
Sonsie - glad you like the manula and the wix site as well. Thanks. :-)
Hi, Brad. I've learned ALOT from reading your posts but I just sent this link to my Broker. She is an AR "newbie" and has a very inquisitive mind so she will put this to good use! Thanks!
Hi Leslie - thanks for "paying this forward," if your broker needs any help, training, or additional support, please feel free to let me know. :-)
Thanks for this. Great manual, I was think of building a wix site.
Thanks Brad - this is a "required" reading for me,
Mike - no problem, hope you'll find it to be useful and save you some time.
Brad -
Thanks to you and your team for spearheading this project. While I realize that many of us have bombarded the technical help desk with questions over the past several months, I know that this will be a real useful tool for those of us - both new and "seasoned" who like to know the "hows, whys and how-comes" of AR.
Thanks for devoting what must have been a heap of time putting the new manual together Brad. I'm looking forward to going through it to help me figure out how to improve my blog site.
Marie - "A Heap of Time" .... I couldn't have said it better myself!! (Big Smile!!!) :-)
Wow! On it's own domain even. I just happend by this post and saw the manual. Nice work. I'll bookmark it. I already picked up a how-to I've learned from. :)
Every day another gold mine from AR! Fantastic! Thank you Brad and AR.
Hey Brad, I just found the manual today via the Help/FAQ and this post. Thank you so much for the great information!
I accidently came across the book when I needed a question answered. AR has so many features that this book will be really good for newcomers, like me, who just hit and misses until I get it right,
Hi Chris and Patty - this book you stumbled across is actually years of my work here on AR. Glad you found it useful. You should check out the site Wix.com which is who I used to create this book, they have some awesome tools on a great platform with some of the best support staff I have ever worked with. I endorse their site every opportunity I get. You can see the quality of their work and site by checking out this manual in detail. If you guys ever need any assistance here, don't hesitate to look me up. :-)
Thanks for sharing so much knowledge. I am also going to bookmark this for reference later. Margaret C.
Hi Margaret - thanks for the reminder, I have some more posts that need to be added to the manual, I'll try to get to that this next month. Glad you're finding the information helpful and useful, thanks. :-)
Brad,
I wish I would have found this manual earlier it would have saved some time on the power curve, it will be the first place to go for many questions.
THANK YOU
Mark
