Using your Gmail Email as a Blog Post and HTML editor.
First of all, what in the heck would make someone think of this? Same way the Reese's Peanut Butter cup was created! It was a total accident. (at least that's what they wanted you to think) Somebody dropped and got their chocolate dipped in someone else's peanut butter and there you have it! The Reese's Peanut Butter cup.
Today, I did the same thing, dropping my email onto this Blog post, and realizing how easy it is to create a post using your gmail email editor. You can add "live" links and anchor text, images, photos etc using gmail's "Compose Mail" option. You can change font colors and sizes and more. Just copy and paste from your email to your Blog post, (email it to yourself as a backup, or to be used again sometime in the future)... and that's it.
It was a breeze.
You can use the Toolbar in Gmail's editor to customize and add some Fun to your posts.
The process is easy, there's no hidden HTML codes that won't work with the AR Platform, and to be honest, some of our best Blogging content, ideas, responses, and experiences are sitting right within your email IN or OUT boxes. I don't suggest you do it all the time, but as you can see, creating a post like this is different and even kinda fun!!
Use the mini-animations and graphics from the favicon toolbar as well.
It's Pretty cool if you ask me, or at the least, something different. (well, maybe I over did it a bit on this one!)
I hope this email Blog Post finds you all well,
it might be useful to those who can't use scribefire or some of the other HTML third party applications and software's out there to create cosmetically different and customized posts for their AR Blogs.
(This post is dedicated to and created for AR member Laura Coffey) Great to meet you @RainCamp LA.
Warm Regards,
Brad

Hi Brad..you always finding new and easy ways for us all to do our business, nice find.
Cheers
Thanks Brad, Hopefully I can get Mozilla Fire Fox installed so I'm able to do it.
Great info Brad! Thanks.
-Paul
Thanks Brad for a great tip... I got so excited and was going to try use gmail editor to add a comment but forgot about that text scraper firewall... I'll try it on my next post though!
hmmmm-maybe I should switch to gmail? My husband did and thinks it's great. Love your mini-animations.
You are amazing! Where do you find the time?
Pretty cool, Brad!! I should explore it, but then... you'll come up with another idea... My head is spinning!
I've just gotten used to Scribefire and all its features, now you're going to make me check out gmail's...
How interesting-I never even thought to try and use the gmail I use everyday for everything for a blog post! I have to say since you told me about scribefire that is pretty much all I use. I love it!
Brad,
Thank you for the tip. I hope that it is easy cuz you don't know how I can break something.
Brad:
Great info & I have had a g-mail account for the past month! I've been slow to find the value in ActiveRain. But, I am now a true believer. My one big issue is not having access to my Localism - I have purchased on a monthly basis the Localism for Westlake, OH. Any new info when Localism & Outside Blogs will be available?
Thanks!
Pat Pribisko
This seems to good and easy to be true. I'm book marking it and trying it tomorrow!
Brad thank you for sharing that. That looks simple enough for even me to do. I wil lhave to give that a try.
Keep in mind that I use Firefox as my Browser, I have not tried this with Internet Explorer yet. :-)
Pretty cool!! Just flagged to be featured. Members need to know the secret :-)
Brad, Creative. Great suggestion. To add to your comment about IE, why would anyone want to use IE unless that have to?
Very cool, I will have to try this. Here's a very non-techy or way behind the program question-do most people create their blog in another program and then copy it in? I'm a little confused. I just write my blog directly on here, it's quite boring, but I'm finally starting to write more often. I figured the first step (hurdle) is to just start doing it. I can get fancy and pretty later. :)
Google docs is an easy to use alternative to scribefire. Insert a table of 490 pixels and you're good to go!
Sounds cool but I am on my macbook and your screen shot is blank. Still, I am looking forward to how incredibly simple this can be, THANKS!
brad - I was going to ask if it worked in IE but I see you have already answered that question so I guese I will have to try it myself (sooner than later I hope)
Howdy and evenin to ya Bard
Thats a mighty interesting idea you came up with.
Brad do you think using the GMail editer is better than using ScribeFire?
Have a good one
Dale
I've been using gmail from the very beginning but I never would have thought to write using it as my editor. I'll have to give it a try.
Hi Brad... I'm not sure if this is something that I will use, but thanks to this post I now want a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Thanks.
Great idea. But I'm also getting a blank screenshot. I'm on Google Chrome.
Brad: I am using Firefox... but am not getting the graphics in your post. Just little rectangles... wide skinny rectangles that tell me what I SHOULD be looking at.
This... is what I see above...
You can use the Toolbar in Gmail's editor to customize and add some Fun to your posts.
Hey Brad
This is the best tip so far this year!
It will add a lot of ZING to my blogs
Here is a youtube video FLASHBACK
Reese's Peanut Butter Cup circa 1980
Brad - This seems like a really neat idea. I will need to try it.
Wow...sadly, I would never have thought of that. Great idea. Google does it again.
Ok, I am checking this out. Reminder to self, use Foxfire. I use scribefire now but those animations are down right cute.
Hey Brad right now the images in this post are NOT showing up.
I can't see the photos! Same thing happen when I tried my own..
Strange - the images are showing up in my browser, I wonder if this is an Internet Explorer issue where the images are not appearing for some of you. I see them, even in Karens comment, I see the toolbar. Hmmm... I'll have to check this out later when I get the chance, thank for letting me know guys. :-)
Brad - the lessons never end and the possibilities are indeed endless with the internet! thanks!
Brad, I love you, you are so awesome!
This post is absolutely the BEST and easiest thing I have ever done. Wow, no crummy code, from WORD, switching to txt editor.
I just did it.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
Brad - Very cool idea. I too use firefox and IE8 may have some problems. Now there's a big suprise huh? Gonna reblog.
Brad, I am using FF 3.6.3 and I am also not seeing your Gmail graphics. There is a selection in FF to "Block images from mail.google.com", but it is NOT selected in my browser so your images should be visible. Weird...
Great idea and will switch over to Firefox to try it out - thanks!
Maybe it's time to take the plunge to Gmail! I don't think there is anything that google does on accident. They have a great "think tank" even if they are trying to take over the world! :-)
Great idea Brad, and thanks! I have been using Nvu but will check this out.
Thanks Brad for the info. Not all the graphics are showing up but I'll check it out.
Brad, I've learned more technology tidbits from AR in the last 45 days than I have in the past 12 months. This would have been great if I used Gmail.
Nice tip Brad... "who'd a thought!" This will come in handy for sure when I'm on the road or sippin' coffee somewhere with wifi... thanks.
Brad. I am a HUGE fan of all things Gmail. I used masny an email and converted it into a blog posts. Saves a lot of time in the future not having to write the same response over again.
I love reeses cups too.
Brad...ok...you realize that you probably dated yourself pretty well there with that Reese's Peanut Butter commercial reference (and unfortunately, me too, since I totally remember those commercials!)?
I use Gmail and Google Docs for as much as possible in life...I work primarily on a Mac...and I have held off on buying Office for Mac 2008 because I don't want to open up that can of worms on my perfectly running, virus & trojan free, machine - so instead I use Google Docs...works for about 95% of my needs for client work. And when it doesn't...I turn to my trusty old Toshiba laptop and pray that it's gonna help me out, just one last time!
Great post!
So, if I am reading this correctly I can use Google for everything? What will I do with my Outlook? Or, can I do this through Outlook as well? I may be confused right now, but by this evening I'll be I convert, and have it going!
Thanks! I am becoming more techie by the minute.....my software buddies would be impressed:)
Brad, you guys are way ahead of the curve !!
As a note - images aren't showing up in Chrome either, so it's not just an IE thing.
Great post! Thanks...
Images are not showing up in Safari.
Great idea- gmail is my email of choice but I am growing to really love mac mail through mobile me when I need less around me rather than noise. :)
I'm using Chrome and I can see the images but I got here from a re-blog and the images weren't showing up there...
The graphics are showing up on my Safari, my Google Chrome, My Firefox, my Flock, and My IE Browser. Maybe it is an issue with the picture servers on AR, or maybe the format that Gmail uses for images is incompatible with certain browsers. I was able to post this as a test on other Blogs and it seemed to work fine there, it should be the same here.
I'll have to dive into this later when I have some personal time to spare and research it, can't be playing around with this stuff during company time!! Oh wait, that's my job here isn't it? lol~
G.... Brad....I love reeses peanut buttert cups tooooooooooo...great post..
What a great idea to do this. Love it and so easy. I am going to play with this comment just for fun. I can use color and so easy, they have my favorite font, I can use Smiley's
and other cute things.
This is great, thanks for the tip !
This looks like fun Brad, thanks for letting us know about using gmail in our blog posts. I'm going to give it a try!
There are multiple ways to skin a cat I guess. If one can still use that expression. Thanks for the post and the tutorial
I have been wondering about a way to jazz up posts. Thanks for the insights. I recently got Gmail because of my Android phone, but really haven't been using it. Guess it's time. Thanks Brad!
Skinning a cat? Really ;-O
I was using Safari last night and the images did not show up but will check again! I still think this is a neat trick!
Lee in comment #4 said something about a text scaper firewall. Where can I find more info on how to turn it off?
Thanks
So much to learn with such little time. Another thing to add to my list. Are you going to talk about this at Raincamp DC Brad? Thanks again for always sharing. Great post.
Thanks....this is a great TIP....
Hi Brad ~ I use firefox and I'm seeing everything just fine. Cool idea. I use Scribefire, but will definitely give this a try.
Denise
Thank you so much. I was just getting ready to make room for Scribefire on my computer, but now, I think I'll check out this alternative.
Thanks, Brad, for this post about idea I saw on Laura Coffey's post about ARcampLA, which was interesting. I have used Posterous.com for blog posting, which also uses Gmail editor and found that valuable, perhaps cumbersome for me, and will try your suggestion.
Thank you, thank you! I have some issues with Scribefire on my computer so this is great.
Brad, this is a great option than using an html editor. Thanks.
Perfect, this will help a ton!
Brad: Wow, my eyes have gone a little buggy here! I think I like this idea; may be a little quicker than Scribefire.
Brad - Awesome! Love all the animation & cool graphics. Anything to add a little fun touch to writing! Thanks.
Not working for me. I've been trying to figure out how to use color in my post for months. Just tried this and it's still not working for me either. Just think, 10 years ago, I was probably considered technologically savvy. Today, I'm so slow, I can't catch myself:).
I think I fell off the technology ship on this one... how about a video demo? I'm lost. Looks interesting though
This is super great!! Thank you for sharing - makes it sooo easy
Brad this is amazing! With all of the questions I get about creating color full content, "often in e-mails" who would have thought the answer was staring me right in the face? Thanks for the great tip. You Rock!
Nice, now my blogs won't be so basic looking :)
This is very good info for sure. Thanks so much.
Patricia
This is very good info for sure. Thanks so much.
Patricia
Humm-Now all the new posts will look like this i bet.
Are you coming to BarCamp Denver? June 17th?
Oooh Oooh OOoh THANK YOU BRAD! Woo hoo!
This looks like a lot of fun. Can you use gmail to create a post for Craig's List?
More great info, thanks Brad.
Hey! Thanks! I was coming here looking for something else and your title caught my eye. Very useful information. Excellent!
Methinks we're going to have a plethora of colorful posts from now on, Brad!
Great tip... very slick and easy. Really great tip. Thanks.
Hey, I will give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for the info.
Thanks a million - this is some very useful information!!

Cheers!
Lisa
What a great idea! I used Gmail for all my email and it's open in my browser all day long. It makes perfect sense to use a tool I'm so familiar with to edit (and save as draft if you need to finish later) blog posts. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the great idea!
Thanks Brad-- off to try it now --- no photo option in my gmail composer... hmmmmm great idea though
What a great idea, thank you! I've always used the wordpress editor for this, but this may even be easier (imagine that!)
What a great use of gmail! I have used gmail for years, but never thought of this!
I love it Brad, thanks. I love Reeses Peanut Butter Cups too!!!
DeeDee
I think this is a good alternative if you want some color font for your stuff, but I would STRONGLY suggest to use it sparingly. Don't go nuts people!
Mark - that was cute! I Love the "expression" photos you use all the time!! :-)
I have way too much playing to catch up on!!!! Do you ever do anything except fun stuff Brad?! :-)
YEAH! I was able to do it! -- It only took me a week to figure out that you DON'T copy the post you DRAG it
LOL - I like to think I am a geek and nerd, but I am just a wannabe
Also, using gmail as your editor you can post to your wordpress blog and it keeps the formatting
Well I'll have to try Gmail to see how it works for me. I don't want to change my regular email account howerver.
Hi Brad, It seems like all good blog editors are not compatible with IE. This is good info but I'm not crazy about the idea of having to leave the AR site to write a colourful blog with great fonts and then have to copy it back here.
To me it's a make work project. I really hope that a more current blog editor tool bar is coming down the pipes in the near future. I would say that members here are ready to graduate to an inhouse editor with more bells and whistles.
Christmas is just around the corner.
Hi Jenny - hopefully we will be able to update and enhance our internal Blog editing capabilities soon. An update to that area of the network is overdue. Thanks for the input and feedback. :-)
Brad - love to use gmail to do of all you described. Today I tried to use it with MacWord copy and paste to gmail "compose mail". When dragging it to AR it showed an error message of something like ".....650000 characters". The blog could not be published until I copy and paste from the Word for Mac document. Submitted to AR to see if they can figure it out. My comment is to share with everyone using MAC.
Petra - Don't use MacWord, that won't work, use your gmail to originate the post, then it will work. :-)
I tried it with Explorer - it doesn't work there.
I tried it with Firefox - Presto! I don't have to use Scribefire anymore (unless I want to use a font that GMail doesn't support, which IMHO is the only downside, besides not being compatible with Internet Explorer).
This is great, Brad. I'm glad you stumbled onto this.
Hi Brad,
I know this is an old post but I have been using gmail as my blog editor in both IE and Chrome for a year now at least and all of a sudden it is not working any more. I'm formatting my content and then copying (tried both CNTR +C and also right clicking and selecting copy both same results) but my formatiing is lost and it is just like the font and size you see here.
Any ideas what is going on?
