The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

It's Not About Your Company - It's ALL About Your People

We just returned home from Seattle, WA where my wife and I spent 3 days and two nights at the Hotel 1000, a spectacular retro/modern hotel and spa located downtown.  We were invited to attend the Zillow Company Holiday party and I was fortunate to also attend my first Z-talk (a company meeting) which is like a state-of-the-division conference.  Man, what a diverse and intelligent group of people.

There were folks from Seattle, Iowa, Idaho, Chicago, SF and NY.... it was awesome!

I really had no idea how many people worked behind the scenes for Zillow until this past week. WOW!

Can you spot my green seat?  lol~  What an honor it was to be included at the Z-talk.  I've never seen or been surrounded by a more passionate and inspirational group of people who make up the Zillow culture and team.  It's truly a privilege to be part of this great company.  Or as Spencer would say, "a Zillowite!"  My wife is still calling me BradZilla  (thanks alot TLW)  :-)

Any company can create a business model, offer decent services and products, and just show up for work everyday, but what really turns a good company into a GREAT company?  I believe that is determined and defined by what differentiates their people, their focus, and their shared passion for their clients, potential customers, and their own success.  Always seeking to do more and to do it better.  I'm proud that Zillow sets very high standards in all arenas.

Being the new kids on the block, we were wondering what it would be like attending our first company Holiday party and social gathering?  You know, a shy and quiet kinda guy like me (yeah right) surrounded by great tech gurus and experts?  Rubbing elbows with many of those whom have made this company a technology and industry leader?

Seriously, my wife and I were treated just like family.  It was like we had always been there.

Everyone made us feel so warm and welcomed, never once did we feel out of place or in bad company.

Our take away?  No matter what you may think of any company or business out there, remember that those companies are made up of people. Real people just like you and I.  They have families, are committed to their jobs, and are loyal to their leadership.  These are just some of the people that made our stay and visit to Seattle one of the best times ever.

My wife and I want to thank the entire Zillow family for their warm and sincere welcome, their generosity and hospitality, and most of all, for making us feel like we belong.  These are some of the nicest and funnest people, we're proud to be associated with such a fine group.

We'll always extend that same warmth and hospitality to all our fellow colleagues, and our new found friends.

~ Happy Holidays ~

Wow, that's a LOT of folks.  I have solda few houses to Delta employees and I always ask if they know the other Delta employees I know... They always look at me like I'm nuts, like "lady, don't you know how many of us there are?"   Looks like that might be the case at Zillow too.  Glad you had fun, and Merry Christmas.

Hi Brad - It sounds and looks like you are enjoying your time thoroughly at Zillow.

Sounds awesome.  I long ago learned it's the leadership (people) that people leave NOT the company.

Nice write up Brad,

You share your experience while highlighting the event.

I found it interesting, and made me a little more appreciative of the organization.

Thanks

Looks like a great time and theme

So right about the people that make up a company. Without them there would be no company

Enjoy the day

Thanks for reading my post that's a little more personal than I usually do you guys, we just had the greatest time.

It was really cool to get to know people first hand and in person, experience and feel the "Z" culture, and witness an authentic passion for  something they all really believe in.  You could just fill it in the air.  My wife even said to me...  "Honey, (she calls me that when she's really happy) walking through the Zillow offices, I could feel something different and very positive in the air!"  She's really good at that stuff you know, has a very keen sense about her and I trust her intuitions... most of the time!  (JK Babe~)

I was just checking out the Google Corp. philosophy.  How do you think it's worked out for them?  They are a "Branded" company now, and most their employees are held in top secret desks where the security abounds, but it's still those PEOPLE at GOOGLE that make Google what it is today.  Woah... just noticed that Google and Zillow both have 6 letters each?...  Just sayin.. lol

Honestly, I'm finding lately that there's a great deal of information and tools that many aren't aware of at Zillow, (including myself), but each day I learn is another opportunity to share it with you.  If it can help your business or it helps a consumer buy or sell their home, then add me to the team!  Have a successful and great week!  :-)

Hi Brad... I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head here.  The really great companies are the ones made up of really great people.  Clearly, Zillow is one of those companies... after all, they hired you!

A church is not a building, it is the people.

A company is not a company without the people. I am so happy for the welcoming you have found at Zillow. Sounds like a great place to work. Relationships make for great companies, even if the pay is less, and I'm not talking Zillow, as I have no clue. But, in general people will stay where they feel connected, loved, appreciated and cared for.

Merry Christmas you and Debra look amazing as always.

I just took a short sale course and test one of the multiple choice questions asked a sucessful agent is one woho, OThe right choice was listens to their clients. One of the other choices was listens to their compasny. So yes it is about the people I agree

Hey everyone, sorry I checked out for a bit...  had a dental issue sneak up on me and take over my life the last two days.  It's been trauma drama here at the Andersohn's, but the vicodin and antibiotics are now doing a wonderful job and I'm back in the saddle again.

A cool little tidbit:
The last words I remember my dentist saying before the gas and anesthetic kicked in were, "Zillow is one of my favorite sites!"  I said to Dr Choi, "Me Too!" and with that, I smiled and think I passed out.  Yes, he really did say that.  lol~

Thanks to all of you for reading and taking the time to comment, I hope you all are doing amazing things for your company and for yourselves. I'm really looking forward to the Holidays this year and spending time with my awesome family and great friends.

@Missy - love the new photo.  :-)
