Integrating Facebook To Your Site - It's Time To Plug-in

Integrating Facebook Into Your Site - It's Time To "Plug-in"

Today I'm sharing one of the more powerful ways I know of to drive traffic, increase growth, and encourage engagement on your site. Using Facebook's new social and personalized feature plug-ins can without a doubt be an asset to your social outreach and marketing efforts.

When you see company's like The Wall Street Journal, Yelp, ABC, TIME, CNN, The Huffington Post, and the New York Times using this method, your motivation to adopt something like this will most likely increase.

Why? Because it works!

Facebook offers some great plug-ins that can make your site more socially engaging and help you grow your existing traffic, returning visitors, and in no time at all, build more relationships and business. Look how some of these sites are using Facebook Plug-ins to not only grow and socially connect their sites and businesses, some of the creative ways in which they're being used are setting some new social trends.

I believe many companies are doing this in order to stay in business and to continue building, managing, and improving their client and potential client relationships. They can't rely on their previous marketing tactics any longer.

The Huffington Post uses - A "Facebook Plug-in" Instant Pop-up

Wall Street Journal  CNN

The New York Times

Even Yelp is now personalizing their site using Facebook Plug-in options.

Let me show you a few of these plug-ins and how to add them to your site, but first you should take a moment to understand how they work so you'll be motivated enough to take the next steps to "plug-in."

1. When you land on any website and see that many of your social friends and connections have already been there before you and liked or participated on that site, there's a tendency for you to want to be a part of it too.

2. Many will like and return to your site simply because others they are influenced by have been there.

It's hard to resist investigating a site that has 46,021 likes and most the faces you see are friends you know.

3. Making your site more socially engaging to others without having to leave to interact is powerful.

4. Knowing content and activity gets shared on others' Facebook walls will definitely create a viral advertising affect and opportunity that is almost guaranteed to drive more traffic and interest to your site.

5. This theory and idea alone should make Facebook plug-ins pretty hard to resist.

There are some great examples of this out there, here's a couple samples of what this looks like.

Inter-active Facebook Comment Box

Live Streaming Inter-active Facebook Plug-in

Activities will appear on Facebook walls

Facebook plug-ins are not widgets, they are "Social plug-ins letting you see what your friends have liked, commented on or shared on sites across the web."  One of the greatest recommendations I can give you is to follow what's happening on the Facebook developers Blog, these are the folks behind the scenes of the largest social network sharing information, tips, and tools for those interested. They've actually been blogging there since August of 2006.

How to Integrate Facebook Plug-ins?
I'll walk you through the steps:

  1. Register your domain name and site with the Facebook:
  2. Select the Social Plug-in you'd like to add to your site:
  3. Customize your plug-in width, height, fonts, and colors.
  4. Copy and paste the custom code to your website.
  5. If you get stuck or need a step-by-step tutorial, use the Facebook Guide:

More Facebook Plug-ins:

Activity - "Displays most recent Interesting Activity on your site"

Comments - "Enables users to leave comments on your site"

Facepile - "Only Displays Friends Faces"

Like Box - "Attracts and gains "Likes" to your Facebook Pages"

Like Button

Live Stream - "Share activity and comments in real-time"

Login Button - "Users Login to your site with FB credentials"

Recommendations - "Personalized recommendations to users"

Since Facebook is the largest and most powerful Social Network on the planet right now (and doesn't appear to be going away anytime soon), how can YOU harness some of that power?  Making your site's experience a little more socially engaging could increase growth and connectivity. Going to to engage with others is great and I recommend it.  However, if Facebook developers are now providing Plug-in tools like this, why not take advantage of this opportunity to put your site on the forefront using their social media power?

Facebook has ALL the faces for sure, and now they're offering YOU a way to get "plugged-in!"

Brad - as usual great information and something I've been meaning to do and have started, but there's still some things I don't understand - not too technologically savvy! I am bookmarking this and implementing later today! I did add a business page, portfolio with the "like" button this weekend and got a redesign job from one of my old high school friends - how cool is that! I'd suggest but - no need!

Posted by Kristine Ginsberg, NJ Home Stager (Elite Staging and Redesign, LLC) over 9 years ago

Facebook is definitely here to stay, and every day more and more pervasive.  The good thing is, they've made it relatively easy to integrate with, which is a good thing.  There's probably some privacy issues involved, but I think the public overall is open to seeing the interactions that occur even on those website.

There's always that surprise of seeing someone else you know on a website you had no idea they could be interacting in.

Thanks for sharing, great information to bookmark!

Brad - This is incredible and thorough information.  I think it would be helpful to explain when one would use a plug in verses a widget (or maybe you are lumping those together?). As the widget are much simpler to install, but usually less robust.

I thought I saw Jim Duncan comment on this being a bad idea last week.... I was not sure exactly what he was talking about though since I am so far behind when it comes to Facebook.  Of course I think he'd say AR is a bad idea too...

Do recommend adding these plug-ins to our "personal" FB page or our "business" FB page or perhaps both?  I am always reading that realtors should shy away from marketing (direct or indirect) on their personal FB page.

Thanks, Brad, for these great tips on integrating Facebook plug-ins. You’re absolutely right that for real estate agents integrating what they’re doing on Facebook (and other social media sites) with what they’re doing on their website is really critical to their success.

In fact, the key to success in real estate marketing really is engaging all of the tools at your disposal – Facebook, Twitter, real-estate specific social networks, your website and blog, YouTube. And, even more than engaging all of those tools, integrated marketing requires using each one to its own advantage.

So Facebook and Twitter are great for meeting people where they’re at; real estate-specific social networks are good for expanding your referral base; YouTube is a great way to engage on a more personal level with clients and prospects; and your website and blog are your home base.

But the real gold lies in putting all of those pieces together – so that connections on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and your social networks flow into your website and blog, where you can turn those connections into hot leads (and then into clients).

Kriselle - exactly!

Von - here's an additional way to use facebook to your benefit and to your readers.

Sara - excellent point, both plug-ins and widgets work similarly, but as you say, the plug-in is much more robust with more powerful options. I suggest checking out the links in the first paragragh of this post for those interested in seeing "How" powerful and "Robust" the plug-ins are compared to widgets.  You'll see how the companies I mentioned above are using the plug-ins and most effectively.

To see the differences, see: Plugins and Widgets

Kristine - Andrew is really good isn't he?

Rich - yes, they're easy to install.  I'm actually doing a self-hosted Wordpress webinar tomorrow for anyone not too busy...

Connie - it actually works the other direction, you'll be integrating Facebook into your website or niche blog sites.

Bob - these plug-ins don't go on either your personal or your business pages. These plug-ins bring your personal or business pages over to your websites and blogs and integrate content there. (if you choose to set them up that way) See the samples in the post above.

Dan and Amy - I would look at each of the company's (mentioned in the first paragraph with links) above, then decide which one(s) will work best for you and your target audiences or your different sites and blogs?  There's not just one that I'd suggest over the other, it's going to come down to preference and 'value-added" and what you feel is best for you.  I like em all....  take a peak at the Facebook SHOWCASE page too, you'll get a great feel for how these work and why they work so well.

Brad, facebook for some reason is a little mystery to me, the personal pages no, but the business page yes.  Just when I thought I had it under control or the way I wanted, it changed on me so I don't know what I did, and I cannot change it back...

I really appreciate what you have put together for us and I also bookmarked the page.  I am determined, I will get it right on facebook so I can integrate what I need to for the blog.  One question is, and I am sorry if this seems like I should know this, but when you want to put your blog address on say your email, which blog address is appropriate, the regular blog we do or the outside blog.  The regular blog has things for members only and I am not sure if this is appropriate to pass on.  Plus when I put it on say my email or my web page, it looks like when I go into it that they could edit it.  So, I am confused. I have not taken enough classes yet I guess.  Thanks you always give so much great information.

Mary - you have a great question: "when you want to put your blog address on say your email, which blog address is appropriate, the regular blog we do or the outside blog."

I would say your outside Blog since this is probably where you are trying to drive traffic and SEO.  It really depends on what you're wanting to accomplish and I shouldn't assume that it's just traffic and SEO.  Members who are paying to be rainmakers typically want to drive the SEO and traffic to their outside Blogs therefore using those links and URLs to promote on emails, signatures, and other sites.

So you know, what you see on the outside blog is not what your visitors see. When you are logged into AR and on your Outside Blog, that is your view only. The same is not visible to your traffic.  You can always log-out of AR, then go to your Outside Blog and you'll see what your clients see.  No one can edit your content or profile info but you. :-)

Patricia - lots of great posts today!

Michelle - you CAN do it~

Joan - great to see you, and yes... you should take a good look, especially at the samples, it will make more cents.. I mean sense.

Christine - always a pleasure to see your comment and know you're still reading my blogs... thank you. :-)

Jim - my pleasure, I love sharing and blogging on AR

Marc - by now you've learned that there's only one reason I make my blog posts so long.....  It's so you'll have to come back! lol~

Dale - you're welcome and thank you for being such a faithful reader, fan, and friend of mine!!!  THANK YOU!!

Carol - you'll love this one then, it's one of the best ways I know to integrate social media to your sites.

Melissa - it's very cool!!

Justin - awesome!!

Christina - until they add the ability to use HTML on AR Outside Blogs, you will always be limited to what you can add there.  I have been asking them to add an HTML widget for over 2 years now, hopefully if enough members request this (SCREAM FOR IT!) then it might actually happen. There's a lot of changes going on around these parts these days so the best time to ask might be right now?!?

(use the about link at the bottom of this page to contact your fav AR staff person and make this request...)
and Don't tell them I sent you. hehe~

Ken - you can rent me for the day, I'm a cheap date!!  rofl~

Anna - now for the month, I require food and water you know!!  lol~

Molly - check them all out and see the samples, there's some cool stuff being done out there with plug-ins.

John - everyone should, but the beauty of it really is that you're probably glad everyone won't.
(That way you get all the business!!!)

Pamelyn - (love your name by the way) For adding badges and widgets to your ActiveRain internal Blog sidebar, you can go to, I think you'll find what you're looking for there.  (plug-ins don't work on AR blogs that I know of)

Ray - that's why you make friends with people like me!  :-)

Chris - make sure you put that on the right list, not the shopping list or the !@#$% list ok?  hehe~

I am following the suggestions of others:  great information and I will check it out on my day off.  I love to stay updated but sometimes there is too much to do.  I too have bookmarked this post so my son can set this up for me.

Hi Brad -- Thanks for elaborating on the various FB Plug-ins. I've added the live-streaming version to my Wordpress site & the Like Button to all my blog posts for the very reasons you touched on. Sorry I didn't see your post until after today's Wordpress webinar -- I'm still barely a novice & would love another opportunity to learn more. Is there a link to the webinar?

GREAT tips!  I needed a kick in the pants to get adding some of these!  I have been thinking about it for a while - and even reviewed some of the developer's tools through Facebook.  Now I just need to take ACTION!   Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

Social Media will be the way to market Realtoes(r), Brad - and Facebook is the leader - and is here to stay.

Great plug-ins - just not too happy about login to one's site using FB credentials. Yes, easy - I know. Feeling comfortable? Surely, NO!
