The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

Exporting and Importing ActiveRain Content

How Do You Export and Import ActiveRain Content?  I can show you...

But First, A History Lesson for those interested:

Let me start off by saying that the reason ActiveRain created and provided the export XML feature on your My Home page was initially because rumors had started that ActiveRain "owned" your content.  This is not true.  This rumor echoed beyond the streets of the community and people outside AR in the blogosphere encouraged some members (who didn't know the truth) to begin building Wordpress blogs.

When we launched the new export feature, it helped secure the fact that members DO own their content, they could now export it for safe keeping, and this rumor was silenced and heard no more.

Months later, the Outside Blogs on ActiveRain were born.  This was to try and help the AR membership so they wouldn't have to go learn a new blogging platform and to obviously retain membership of the fast growing community. As limitations on the Outside Blogs began presenting themselves, there were some folks who decided to have multiple blogs both on ActiveRain and on other outside sites like Wordpress, Blogger, Tumblr, and Posterous. I had asked Jorgen (AR's previous CTO) how a member could use the XML file from ActiveRain on other sites and was told members would have to figure it out for themselves or get a programmer.

That was the day I started learning about XML, Wordpress, and how to do what I'm about to share.

Little did I know that yet "Another Rumor" would be born of a "site-wide shutdown" and an umbrella site created to supposedly move your content over from AR to WP (which BTW - didn't work for me)  My personal opinion is that you should never have to give your passwords on any of your sites for a simple import and export feature which is one of the reasons I'm sharing this with you.  Providing you with an alternate solution that most of you might not even need because ActiveRain is NOT shutting down is the motive here.

Hopefully... another rumor silenced.

Skip To Here if Not Interested in the AR History:

Here's a simple solution and instructions for exporting your AR content into a self-hosted Wordpress Blog should that be your desire. I'm only doing this so that those of you who may have fallen prey and victim to the rumors mentioned above will now have peace of mind knowing your Blog content is backed-up and safe.  It's no different than backing up the files on your computer's hard-drive for safe-keeping. The process does take a bit of technical patience and wherewithal, but I have tested this and made sure the steps are simple enough that even I could do it.

Here are two samples of Wordpress self hosted sites where I've completed the entire "export/import" process and made them available for you to check out.  The Rain Blog and The Mothership Domain.  If you have any questions after reading the tutorial, watching the video, or run into any issues or errors, please let me know.  I want to be sure that you have the same peace of mind that I do so that you'll continue blogging here just as I plan on doing for a long time to come.

Honestly, I hope ActiveRain outlives me so that my kids and grand-kids can come here one day and see what a great time their Dad and Grandpa had planting seeds, creating growth, and harvesting crops in the RAIN.

Hi Brad,

So there is no way to bring the comments over to WP? Maybe that is just as well. Is there any way to keep Members Only posts from becoming Public?

I've also been copying and pasting some of my blogs over to wordpress because I read that when you do the export it also brings over your "members only" blogs which I did not want to export.

Is Jorgen's Umbrella ?ActiveUmbrella?  thing for exporting the content to a site?  I did not try because I am not giving my passwords or reposting my content elsewhere.

I am going to Re-Blog this to the WordPress group here. I have a blog but it is not the same content as  AR.  I also have three ActiveRain Outside blogs.

The rumors are annoying.

Maureen - you hit the nail on the head, I felt the same way about providing my passwords too.
(Not to mention the people I tried to help use it and it didn't work at all for them)

I love it here at ActiveRain and lets face it, if AR didn't agree with this, then the post would not be featured.
Thanks to whoever did feature this, you've helped reduce the incoming calls and emails I've been receiving regarding this.  I really appreciate them helping get the word out.

Brad, What is the purpose of having multiple blogs.  Some say Wordpress ranks better in the search engines.  Activerain says Activerain ranks better.  Some talk about exporting content from one blog to another. It seems that some peolple have three or four blogs. Others warn against duplicate content.    So what and who is a girl to believe?!

Of the ones that have three or four blogs, and if they don't use the same content, I would love to know how they find time to maintain all of them.

Yeah, I exported my stuff not because I thought AR was shutting down tomorrow, I did it because there was my answer in front of me, and push a button and whammo, all over to my site... yeah, exept for one detail. I forgot to uncheck the little box and all of it was published, not put in draft form.

I wanted my stuff somewhere else in addition to AR simply because I have been down the AR is broken road a few times too many. And, honestly, what worries me most is cost. If it becomes too costly I will have to rethink things.

You know I love AR, and appreciate all the info you have provided me. I will bookmark this and come back later to check it out. After I am done deleting all those posts... all 800 plus posts that published on my site in a very strange way I might add, LOL.

As always, thank you for the information!

Broker Bryant - Great question.

I would think that WP would see the Title/content and warn of duplicate content, but I'll have to run some tests to be certain.  AR does not let you selectively choose what to include in your XML export (would be a nice feature to add if the new CTO and programmers are reading and listening) but you should be able to put all the newly imported posts from a second XML file into "draft mode" just to be sure there's no duplication or overwriting.

That's what I'll do to test this for you.

I'll be in Florida in the next couple days, maybe I should pop by and see you and TLW... maybe we could get some dinner out on the town if she's up to it, I should have an answer for you by then???  PS - This is not a bribe!!  :-)

I really wish we could import comments. They really are the secret sauce and there is no downside, because if it doesn't start here then there are no comments.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! What I'd REALLY love is to be able to export the posts one by one, so that I can tag them by content on my outside WP site. Create a library of old posts on different subjects that could be searched, rather than a rolling rss feed type of thing. Guess I'll go play with it and see what I can figure out.
