The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

Pinterest - A Social Cataloging Community

Pinterest is basically a social catalog.  It's a community to share collections of things you love.  It's similar to a "like" on Facebook, or a "+1" on Google Plus. It's even like "Digg" "Delicious" "StumbleUpon" and "ReTweeting" but the difference at Pinterest is that it's all about "Pin" or pinning content.

According to TechCrunch, Pinterest hit 10 million US monthly uniques faster than any standalone site everAGBeat says that Pinterest now drives as much traffic as Twitter  Since Pinterest accounts are by invitation only, how do you get invited?

You can ask a friend, or you can also just request one like I did right from the site.  It took about three days, then an email invite arrived at my in-box.  I've setup a couple boards myself to see how it all works and to learn how to navigate around the site.  To be honest, I like the ease of use.  I can see the potential the site has and why it's getting tons of attention.  It's worth checking out, Pinterest has something for everyone for sure.

Some Quick Pinterest Etiquette:

Be Nice! Be Creative. The best pinboards mix products, art, recipes and images from all across the web. Try not to pin everything from a single source.  Give Credit. If you blog about an item you found on Pinterest, it's nice to credit your fellow pinners by linking back to the original pin.

A Few Tips once you get started:

Make sure you Install the bookmarklet. It lets you add a pin from any website with just one click.

Be sure to follow others pinboards. You can use your Twitter and Facebook accounts to find other friends on Pinterest to follow as well as invite. Pinterest is as much about discovering new things as it is about sharing.

Pin carefully! Use big images, write thoughtful descriptions, and pin things you really love. Also, no nudity, sorry!  :)  Oh yeah, and ' forget to follow me on Pinterest too.

Brad this interesting and intriguing but I just don't know if I have one more iota of attention span left for one more site...much as I would like to.  Somehow, I just have to work real estate into the day.  I hope you continue to benefit from Pinterest.

@Marc #14. It's the fastest growing social media site of all time. Ever. It passed everything but FB in December.

But please, please, please we do not want the Realtors to dork this up. No listings unless it's an incredibly cool shot. No logos, no junk.

PS: Brad love the "Journey" board. Scenes from my childhood on the Russian River and Monterey. Repinned several. Social media at it's best!

Hi Brad, I heard about this many moons ago and at the time I said I wasn't "pinterested" in joining, I simply had no time to devote to it. As it grew more popular and I heard what other people are doing with it, I had a change of heart and am now signed up. I've posted two things. The reason I'm lagging is this:

We've been discussing pinning other people's pictures on Pinterest in some Facebook groups, and one of my main concerns was copyright infringement. I have a very bad feeling that pinning someone else's photo is in violation of copyright, even though Pinterest says it's OK. Their advice on it (along with their Copyright info) is this:

"Credit Your Sources

Pins are the most useful when they have links back to the original source. If you notice that a pin is not sourced correctly, leave a comment so the original pinner can update the source. Finding the original source is always preferable to a secondary source such as Google Image Search or a blog entry."

We've had it hammered into us on Active Rain and in other forums that simply giving credit to the source is not suffucient to satisfy copyright, and that we eithr need to get permission from the photo's owner or buy a license to use it on our own site. So, if I go to someone's blog and see a gorgeous picture of a Pacific sunset or some mouth-watering gourmet creation and pin it to my board, is simply crediting the source as Pinterest says really going to protect me if the owner of that picture decides to sue me for copyright infringement? If I do this on my blog without getting permission to do so, I'm opening myself up to a lot of grief. Forgive me for erring on the side of caution, but how can we be sure we're protected from legal action? To me, this seems like a huge problem waiting to happen. I don't think I'm going to pin anything until I can get a satisfactory and legally binding answer to this.

Thanks for your patience!

I created an account last night and will find time to add it to the "mix" of other "popular" venues that everyone seems to enjoy. Truly seems like most of us will easily be able to say.. "we don't have time." But like you say, "it's popular with consumers." Grrrrr. I'll go pin a few pics tonight.. maybe I'll find a way to have some fun with it. How's your son and his band doing? Hope you are well.

Posted by Greg Nino, Houston, Texas (RE/MAX Compass, formerly RE/MAX WHP) almost 9 years ago

Wayne - I wouldn't worry about that too much.  Twitter isn't going anywhere because of all the retweets which might also be considered "copyright infringed" right?  ActiveRain isn't shutting down or removing the "ReBlog" feature either etc.

Pinterest automatically puts a "Link Back" to the original author and site. Pinterest also suggests that adding any additional "kudos" or links along with a good description is good for all.  Think of it simply as retweeting, reblogging, resharing, video embedding, and discovering.  This is what we all refer to as "viral exposure" and it's all good.

Now if they decide that there is anything illegal or inappropriate about all the activity and millions using Pinterest, than I, along with the millions of others will have to find another safe and sane way to "discover & share" all the great things the Internet has to offer, and I'm OK with that too.  I think it's legit and see great value in some of the ways it's already being used by so many others.

Take a moment to read the two articles I mention in the first paragraph.

I'll put together a post with the top 10 reasons folks in the real estate business might want to consider finding a little time to "Pin" on Pinterest.  I'll bet some of you can come up with 4 or 5 obvious reasons right now...    :-)

I am on pinterest and I can see how this would be a great tool for link building. Many people post links to products they like and repin it. Real Estate agents could post listings but not overly spam their account with listings which link to their site. Loving pinterest so far.

Pinterest is actually a time saver for all those people who find cool things on the web and then have to think of some way to organize/save them, so they can find them later when they have the time to do them.  This would include recipes and home decor, gardening ideas, stuff for the kids or grandkids, holiday ideas, so much more.

If you think of it as finding cool stuff to show off to other people, then don't bother. Think of it as a way to organize all the stuff you love and don't want to lose track of, since every pin links back to the original source you don't have to 'save' that how-to video that you don't want to lose, just 'pin' a picture from the site and you'll be able to find it again easily.

Then, other people might also like what you pinned and that's fun.

The obvious way to use it for real estate is to pin a picture from one of your blog posts. Just make sure you don't get spammy, pin a really good photo of something unique. If you write a post about a listing, include a picture of the backyard fountain, then pin it under 'garden ideas'. If anyone wants a closer look at it, they'll be taken right to your blog post.

I took a picture of a great tree at a house I was showing, will write a post about the fact that I would buy a house just to get a great tree like this, and pin that photo to Pinterest.

I have been addicted to Pinterest for months. I have several creative hobbies I love to pursue in my spare time and also love to collect ideas for interior design and landscaping. The greatest benefit so far to me has been the money it has saved me in buying magazines - sounds silly but it's true. Everything you can find in any magazine is on Pinterest somewhere. :)

I don't really see an application at all for sales, because as an avid user, I would be very annoyed if advertisements started showing up in my newsfeed! However, I do mention it to my contacts and on my social media outlets quite often. I invite them to join and to check out my boards on home organization, decorating, crafting, etc. I think it's another fun resource we can direct them too, but I will never use it to promote listings.

Thanks for bringing up the topic - it will be interesting to see how it evolves as it grows.

Updated Terms of Service

Over the last few weeks, we've been working on an update to our Terms. When we first launched Pinterest, we used a standard set of Terms. We think that the updated Terms of Service, Acceptable Use Policy, and Privacy Policy are easier to understand and better reflect the direction our company is headed in the future. We'd encourage you to read these changes in their entirety, but we thought there were a few changes worth noting.

  • Our original Terms stated that by posting content to Pinterest you grant Pinterest the right for to sell your content. Selling content was never our intention and we removed this from our updated Terms.
  • We updated our Acceptable Use Policy and we will not allow pins that explicitly encourage self-harm or self-abuse.
  • We released simpler tools for anyone to report alleged copyright or trademark infringements.
  • Finally, we added language that will pave the way for new features such as a Pinterest API and Private Pinboards.

We think these changes are important and we encourage you to review the new documents here. These terms will go into effect for all users on April 6, 2012.

Like everything at Pinterest, these updates are a work in progress that we will continue to improve upon. We're working hard to make Pinterest the best place for you to find inspiration from people who share your interest. We've gotten a lot of help from our community as we've crafted these Terms.

Thanks!
