The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

Who put a link in the comments of this post? Please Do!!!

Would You?  I know it's against the general guidelines of Active Rain and the Etiquette 101 Group to put links (SPAM) in the comments of other members posts.  I agree with this rule and will fully abide by it.  In this one case, can we make an exception?

I wanted to share with others, some of the coolest things I have found out on the rain.  Being a newbie (there's that word again),  I wanted to share the resources and discoveries I have made.  My invite list has grown larger than expected, and I feel I owe them this post!

I am asking the "Rain Gods"  to make an exception with the comments just in "this post."  I am actually asking for links in the comments  (just this once).  I'm looking for links to the Best and Coolest stuff.  (see mine below)  This is for me and all my Realtor and Lender friends that I invited to Active Rain.  Others will surely benefit too.

This network is such a powerful resource of information with thousands of members and millions of posts.  It could take months or even years to read all those, to find out about all the technologies and knowledge that is available via these 25,000+ members.  So here goes...

Since joining Active Rain around seven weeks ago, (Feb 27th to be exact),  these are some of the "Best" tools, links, services, technologies, and just "COOL STUFF" that I have found.

"BRAD's Top 10 Active Rain Discoveries"  -  THIS IS REALLY COOL STUFF!!

  1. Slide - Creates Free slide shows.  Great for Website, Listings, Family and Friends etc.
  2. Meebo- A Free Online Chat Module for your website or Activerain Profile Page
  3. Overweb3D - Cool Multimedia for your Real Estate Website
  4. Google Analytics - Awesome tracking for your website and profile page
  5. Clustermaps - FREE Visitor Mapping for your web.  Shows a World Map with all your visitors
  6. BatchGeoCode - Map Multiple Locations, great for travel of tour sheet
  7. Rand McNally - (NEW) Get directions between multiple stops, all in one route
  8. Google Earth - Absolutely the coolest thing on Earth! The world at your desktop! FREE
  9. Primo PDF- A Free PDF Convertor, Converts any printable doc to a .pdf format (save $500.00)
  10. MyPublisher - A website that allows you to upload photos and create a nicely bound book
for your clients. A great closing gift! Less than $30.00. (A Great Referral Book)

I know there are hundreds more, so what have you discovered on Active Rain?  I've shared with you, now it's your turn.  What is the first product, link, website tool, or program that comes to your mind?  Please create a link to it in the comments section below.  Come on...you gotta share.

I'm hoping that other members will find more value in your comments, than they do my post.  :-)

There's no prohibition on Active Rain or out in the blogosphere against using links in comments.

If you use too many links on comments outside Active Rain, anti spam software may throw the comment into a spam filter or moderation. If it is comment spam (advertising) it may not see the light of day out on the blogosphere with good spam filters.  If it is a legitimate comment carrying on the conversation the blogger will get a comment that tripped the spam filter out of moderation and add it to comments.

Links in comments can be a very good way to continue the conversation, links can provide information from an expert source.

Brad I assume the Active Rain Guideline you are referring to is: "Do not advertise yourself or your services in the comment section of another members blog post." With or without a link a comment advertising oneself is spam and not always welcome. Some on Active Rain spam with a link others do it without link.  Often it is someone new. A comment like "good info, thanks for sharing" with a tagline, a personal photo, with or without a link is comment spam, Active Rain gods leave moderation of comments up to the individual blogger.  You see new members thrilled with comments leave up spam ... because "hey I got three comments!"  All three say "great info, thanks for sharing."

The links I'd share are to GOOD blogs outside Active Rain. There is a huge world out there of excellent real estate blogs and phenomenal tech blogs and blogs about every imaginable subject.  Below are some tech blogs I've been reading on and off for awhile now.  Some of it is way over my head but some is starting to sink in.  IMHO It's good to read outside of Active Rain. It doesn't earn you any points but Active Rain would be a better place if more members brought new ideas in from outside rather than churning the same stuff over and over. Out in the tech blogs some of the A list blogs get hundreds of comments but they aren't the Active Rain "good info, thanks for sharing" with or without a link... kind of comment we see here because of the points.  There is lots of good conversation in the comments on many blogs outside Active Rain because there are no points. There's info to be gained in reading the comments.

A few tech blogs I read:

The Jason Calacanis Weblog ,  Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google, and SEO , Doc Searls Weblog , O'Reilly Radar , Tony Hung's Deep Jive Interests They blog about technology but they also blog about work, travel, other blogs, bigger ideas, world events and their cats. Matt Cutts did a review of a Wendy's sandwich yesterday. Sometimes they are boring sometimes it is enlightening.

Comments are meant to carry on the conversation.  Comment spam does not carry on the conversation, comments with meaningful links to information are welcome on blogs inside Active Rain and outside.

Brad,

You posted another good informative blog...and of course another feature.

And no...I am not advertising even though the link with my name is in all comments as it is for all, would you consider that an advertising link? LoL!

Interesting.... if you put your name in bright lights in the comment section some consider it selling yourself, but as I mentioned above, the links for our names seem more to be considered the same, our names are links and as you can click on it ,you are directed to our home page.

Seems the same, but no one ever mentions that.

Thanks, Brad. Cool list. I don;t think the issue is links, period. It is links back to the commenter's site that is the problem when it is advertising. Since the commenter's name is there people have the option of going to the site anyway, the added advertising is what is annoying.

Thanks for some great links.  Something my friend & Rainer Gregg Franklin told me about is Mozy.com.  There were a couple of blogs written about this great service with only 5 responses.  This is one of the slickest things since sliced bread. for only $4.95 a month, they automatically back up my pc and laptop while I'm sleeping every night.  The back up is not just data---it's all my programs, emails, etc.  If my computer goes down or needs to be replaced,I just upload everything from Mozy.com and I'm back in business!

Thanks Cynthia for starting the gadgets, tools...I'll be going there often!

I had to delete some posts recently - someone was putting in information that wasn't all bad - even though some of the numbers weren't right... but they would then solicit from MY post!

My post is for ME, and comments are either to counter my points or to support my points... they can also create a thread of healthy conversation!  But they're not for someone else to get business from!

I don't think it's poor etiquette to put links in comments, even though I don't think I've ever personally done it.  As long as somebody actually makes a comment and doesn't just "spam" my post, I could care less.  If people are getting worked up about this, they might need to switch to decaf.

Brad,

What I understood about the guidelines, it is not to add links to advertirse your service or make spam in the comments section of each blog, but these links should be allowed when we are sharing important information, tools, tips, tricks, etc to improve our websites, way of life, etc.

I do not see any bad on all of these,

Good work, I will cooperate later as soon I have time :)

HAHA....always gotta have one or two going against the grain......good for you!
Posted by Christy Powers, Pooler, Savannah Real Estate Agent (Keller Williams Coastal Area Partners) almost 13 years ago

Maureen,  I had to save this comment section just for you.  First, I just wanted a link in your comment, didn't realize you were going to do a "Great Post" in the comments of mine, but I am glad that you did.  (Really Big Smile).  Part of the reason I did this post was that I was curious how many members read the comments or just the post, or both.  I also wanted to find out what others had discovered and would be willing to share.

I believe there is often times more power in the comments than the post.  The comments are a collection of many personalities, opinions and views.  The post is only ONE person's opinion.  I found myself reading other members posts and going straight to the comments to reply.  Though important to stay on track and with the beat, after reading the comments, I found myself typing something entirely different.  I see that happen sometimes on my posts. It takes on a life of it's own.

Shamefully enough, I thought I was the only one guilty of this. Some Read posts, some read both. I now read both or skim over the 60+ comments.  My goal with this post was to create a Network of great links to great applications, tools and services. (Thank you for yours by the way, they are great blogs:-)  My intent is to share this post with other members who will benefit not just from the links I posted, but from the comments and links that came from the powerful knowledge of other A/R members just like yourself.

Just trying to Save time and pull together all the resources on AR for a useful post in both body and comments.  Looks like it's going ok so far, but I am only up to your comment right now and need to go see what else is here. :-)

Lastly, thank you for setting me straight regarding links vs spam in the comments of a post.  I have noticed some very meaningful and useful conversations, and I too have had the  "Greaty Post, Thanks!"  It can be frustrating at times like now, ask for a link, they comment, and leave.  I'd hate to think there are folks out there just addicted to points like me.  Oooops, did I say that outloud?  Thanks for your comments, they are always welcomed and appreciated.  :-)  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) almost 13 years ago

Mario - Thanks for taking time to post your comment, it is welcomed and appreciated.  Things do go by so fast sometimes, if you blink, you missed it. SERIOUSLY, at times, I have turned my head to see something, and missed the best part of the movie!!  It happens out here on the web too.

Just trying to capture some "Greater Value" out of an already powerful network of industry professionals. (and techies)  :-)

Chris, was that the link you intended to share?  Just curious, maybe I'm missing something. Sorry :-(

My intentions were for other members to leave links in the comments (Welcomed) at this post.  This was so we could share what other valuable resources are available without spending gobs of hours looking for stuff we don't even know exists.  Tons a Class? Low Class? I am not really sure.  Either way, no worries....

I Just wanted to share with others like others have shared with me.  I hope you weren't offended in any way by this post or it's contents.  The link you did leave had me wondering... (humble puppy dog smile)  :-)

Great point about the names at the bottom, I don't think it's mentioned much because it's consistent with each other members comments.  I think the one's that scream SPAM are much more obvious and intentional.  We have a smart group out here, it always works out.   sssssssshhhhhhhhh.  :-)

The point is, I WANTED YOU TO LEAVE A LINK!!!!

SharonJOTT is fabulous!!  These are the kinds of tools that I think all members can find value in.  I type with 4 fingers, so I personally loved it.  Thanks for doing exactly what my post requested.  I think some were confused and thought I didn't understand spam in the comments area (evidenced by some of the comments above) love em all anyway.  (GOLD STAR) for you!!  :-)

Glad you liked it, you should adjust the tilt over any location. Google Earth lets you virtually fly over any area at the speed you desire.  It is one of my favorites, I use it everyday for one thing or another. Thanks for your comment.  Any links you recommend?  Feel free to come back and post them here.

Jodi - Thanks, you must be on a points spree.. (big smile) that was 12 and a half points per word!  I don't think the exclamations count for additional bonus points.   Hard to write back a long meaningful thank you to such a short post.... and no link in return to boot?!?  What's up with that?  Just giving you a bad time, I know I got the same treatment when I was leaving 2 word comments on members posts.  Now I tend to leave a wall of words.  Ask Connie (Coach K), she'll tell ya.  Though it was short, thanks for the comment, it's the thought that counts.  You did read my post right?  Hope you have a great week!

 (Huge Smile at Ya)  :-)

Hey thanks for sharing what you've found. We all find cool tools here but it's hard to see every one of them so I appreciate the re-cap.

Thank Ryan, it is hard to keep up with all the cool and useful stuff out there.  Since you stated "We all find cool tools here ", would it be fair to ask you to leave us a link to some of the cool things you have found?  I hope you don't mind me asking, that was the intentions of this post.

I'm not saying this is you, but alot of folks just want to comment and run. I'm not even sure if they read the entire post.... just hope that the points addiction doesn't water posts like this down. Thanks Ryan for letting me venti.  Hey, that sounds good roght now, a cup of java, yeah, that's the ticket!  Thanks Ryan :-)

On the serious side of life, the one item that I'm surprised isn't yet here is Hit Tail.

Want to see who found your site, useing what search engine, and what they used for keywords - Hit Tail!

You'll find some interesting keywords.  Somebody searching for "Gall Bladder Removal" on MSN found my site the other day.  Hit Tail showed me that.  I'm almost done cleaning out the garage, as soon as I'm done we'll be open for business.  "Mike's Mortgages and Gall Bladder Removals"

Hey Doreen - check this zip code site out:  http://acg.media.mit.edu/people/fry/zipdecode/

Start typing any zip code one digit at a time.   - coolio, eh?

A+ !!!   A perfect 10!!  I checked it out and this is a site that could be valuable to every member in every segment of our industry!  Great link, valuable tool, you're are the Bomb!  Thanks you for sharing this with us, you could have kept it secret, but you chose to share.  You are good people!!  :-)

Mike

Gall Bladder removal, really?  Is this a contingency to doing a refinance?  Why did they find you with that search?  That's just WRONG, or maybe right?  Should I add those keywords to my meta names on my website?

You are too funny Mike.  Thanks for the two GREAT Links, I think they are both valuable, well 1 is for sure, I have not checked out the coolio one.  Sure appreciate you Mike the "Morthgage Guy".  Oh sorry...the hockey guy...   :-)  Go Sharks!!  (my sons favorite team, he's in San Jose) !!

Doreen, for you, I'll do it.  I'm going to let this post go for a while and see what other links we can get. I will do another post later once I have gathered enough links to really make it worth while for everyone. Thanks again for yours, you can always post others if they come to mind.  Look at this post as a comment dropping zone for the best stuff you can think of.  :-)

On another note,

Jeff Turner had this on his blog, this one is really cool. He even does a demo! Jeff - You Rock!!

Wufoo.com is one very good tool.  Wufoo.com passed through the filters above with flying colors. It is mind numbingly simple to use. It is free if you don't need more than three forms. That's pretty cost effective. And it does everything you could want it to do, including notify you when someone fills out a form, send the user a confirmation email and collect and store the data entered into each form. When I read about it, my first thoguht was... "too good to be true." I've tested lots of form creation tools. This one works as advertised.

Do you want to see how cool it is? Click the play button.

I subscribed to Polldaddy.com last week for one of my blogs but I can't find my sign in info now and I need a poll on one of my blogs big time.  I have used another poll on my first blog and it does a good job but the Polldaddy polls are so attractive.  I just did a test drive the other day but I am going to do a pizza poll on one of my local polls.

Polling is fun.

This is the real link and not the rip-off sites that take your credit card to provide you with your credit score.  Have your clients use this to pull their free annual report and start fixing issues before you get to the mortgage broker.

https://www.optoutprescreen.com/opt_form.cgi

This is another great site that will remove the soft hits to your clients credit.  The physical result is a decrease in credit card offers by mail and phone.  You can specify the duration and even opt back in if you don't feel enough love in your mailbox.

What I understood about the guidelines, it is not to add links to advertirse your service or make spam in the comments section of each blog, but these links should be allowed when we are sharing important information, tools, tips, tricks, etc to improve our websites, way of life, etc.

Thanks Rebecca - the intent of this post was to gather as much info as I could to share with others I have invited to join Active Rain.  There is so much info and knowledge out here, this was the only way I felt I could get my arms around just a tiny portion of it.  Based on all the comments and links, I'm feeling that this was a pretty good idea, though I had my doubts at the time!  Just goes to show ya, blog it, no matter what!!  Thanks again!    :-)

Brad here is one that I refer my clients to when they are looking for information on the city or town that they are looking to move to. www.city-data.comIt is a great way for them to get the information that they are interested in without putting the Realtor in a tough spot by not being able to answer certain questions on race, religion etc.

Donna - great link, thanks for your contribution.  Many come, many go, some take, some leave, it's all good, but I appreciate very much when people read the post, and then actually contribute as you have.  The more contributions to this post, the more benefit to other readers.  Thanks very much, I like the city data link you posted!!   :-)

Jeff - One of my favorites, I have to admit.  You can use it for Buyers, sellers, open houses, closing gifts, I have even used it as a xmas gift for the members of my family.  It is a really unique, inexpensive and wonderful gift.  I hope you have fun with it and enjoy it as much as we have.  :-)

A tool to definitely check out is HouseFront.com.  We provide real estate valuation services on our website and through text messaging- send an address to 46873 or 'HOUSE' to get back property data.  We understand that there are many tools out there, and we can't be 100% accurate all the time. We do have over 100 Million properties in our database.  Check us out!

From our website you can send a property you are interested in to your cell phone.  We also have a widget so you can provide property values on your website.

Obviously, I am showing that I am fairly new to the ActiveRain scene by getting to this blog so late after it was published.

I first checked in here (to AR, not Brad's site) after there was a mention of the site in the National Association Of Realtors magazine.

At that time I wasn't very impressed so I went away for a while.

Now I'm back and it is amazing how much transition has taken place here. Now it is almost overwhelming and blogs come on faster than I can read them. I have already learned to pace myself...a little...until I get to sites like your's. Then I find that the information you put out, for the most part, is VERY useful and the time you spend to help others is to be commended. Thanks...it will take me days to read all your blogs, and yes, the comments also. Both combined offer a wealth of information.

Since, I'm new I really had not studied all the "Proper" things to do here and I wrote a blog (the details are in the Lil'devil)  that got some thoughts going but wondered, now, after you have seen the numerous responses and enthusiasm, how do you feel about this subject you have presented.

If you land on MY pitch fork you're going for a short trip to visit ME, but you'll be back!

One of my favorite 'quick diversions' is to PostSecret each Sunday.  Basically people send in a 'secret' on a postcard and each Sunday a new collection of cards are posted at this website.  It only takes a couple of minutes to read through them and I'm always left thinking about these stories during the week.

Brad,

I didn't check out PrimoPDF - I aready have win2pdf and I'm happy with it.  The unregistered version is free, but you can pay $40 as I did to avoid a tag-line at the end of the PDF's you make.  This works easily as you just pick it as a printer and it prints to a PDF file.

Aloha,

Jeff

Brad,

Thanks to all for these extremely useful links. I actually scrolled through all the comments to make sure this one wasn't included.

I've checked a few online efax/email companies and this is the best so far as price and being dependable. Starts at 4.95/month. I got tired of running to the office or fear of running out of thermal paper etc. Now I can send faxes from anywhere. Especially I love this service when I need to send in an offer speedily or other essential docs. I scan and save as pdf then fax or email:  www.trustfax.com

Jeff - PrimoPDF is FREE and has no tag lines, super imposed images, or expirations.  It works just like a printer option as you mentioned. I love it!  FREE solution to those who don't want t spend any $$$$.  Thanks for the comment!   :-)

One site i find incredibly useful is a site I found a while back that allows me to manage contacts and send them printed cards in my own handwriting without leaving my computer. Agents can even upload photos (for example, of homes that clients buy) and have them printed right on the cards thanking them for buying a house...Its awesome.  I even use it to send out birthday cards for my family.  There is a fee to use the service, but it has proven to be invaluable to me.  And I make money doing it.....:-)

Check it out at www.sendoutcards.com/millertime

In the interest of keeping this post 'alive' I want to offer up another link that I discovered through ActiveRain.  It is a link to the Animal Rescue Site where by clicking on the purple box you donate food to rescued animals.  Seems like a great idea to me!

Thanks Michael - great idea and a worthy site.  With all the foreclosures, REO's, and short sales going on all over the country, I hear and see many animals getting left behind and abandoned.  The Animal Rescue foundations all across the country must have their hands full and can use all the support they can get right now.
