The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

There's Blog Power in Your Mouse - It's The Right Click

How many times on average do you think you will click that mouse button in your lifetime?  LOL~  I can't begin to imagine how many times I have already.  This is a tip that I will preface by saying, "it may be a simple one, and you may already know this, but if you don't, this will save you tons of time and frustration when it comes to copy and paste on ActiveRain."
The tech tip today is: "The Right Click!" for FIREFOX USERS!!

Is There Blog Power in Your Mouse??

Here's the scenario - let's say you are going to copy a link and a snippet of text from your website, or outside Blog.  Maybe you just want to copy and paste the disclaimer you have at the bottom from your previous post.  OK, so we all know how to use the browser menu, select edit, choose copy, then go to your draft post, select edit, then choose paste(The typical way)

(This can also be done with shortcuts CTRL+C to copy, and CTRL+V to paste)

The problem is, you'll get this box...

ActiveRain Copy and Paste Screen

...and reformat it all, line it all back up, (correct my typos like annows to annoys...LOL ) create spaces and breaks in the text, and then re-add all my previously existing links.  What a pain, would you agree?

This may seem silly to some of you that I would even take the time to post a tip like this
, but in all honesty, I just figured this out myself not too long ago, and even funnier, I know some of you are running to your Blogs right now just to try it out.  haha.  Then, you'll either come back here and call me nuts because it didn't work, and you think I'm pulling your leg, or you'll say absolutely nothing at all, for fear that someone will think we're complete idiots for not knowing about this already. ROFL! It's OK, just know it works.:-)

This tip will also work for your graphics and images too.  Yes, There is Blogging Power in your Mouse!

Here's a sample of using a single right click of the mouse to copy and paste text, links and images.

I just learned the ctrl+V and ctrl+C.  My husband keep telling me to read all of the shortcuts.  These are the things that makes us more efficient.  Thanks Brad right now...I appreciate every tip I get!

I can always use an easier way to do something... I have known it but did not realize what a "mess" the harder way makes!  Thanks Brad. You guys and you're info are great. I always know I will get a sanity check at least once a day trying to figure this "bloggin" out and appreciate your posts that lead me back to sanity! Keep it simple!  Thanks!

Brad - Thanks for the Firefox tip!  I never have this issue in Explorer, but when I use FF, I get the box you mentioned here.  I will try the right click trick today!

Sara - This tip will also work for your graphics and images too.  Yes, There is Blogging Power in your Mouse!

I just used the "right click" to add the line above to this comment.  (Pulled it right out of the post) Looks like it works in the comments too, but please don't put links in the comments, they will get stripped.

Let me try a graphic now and see if I can right click and place it here...

Yep, it works!  :-))

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) almost 12 years ago

Jason - yes, this is for those using Mozilla Firefox on a PC.  I have tested it in Explorer and the CTRL+C and CTRL+V work fine without that box popping up.  Problem is, I use a MAC, and if on a PC, I only use Firefox, IE causes too many issues on AR.  You did know that IBM stands for "I'm Buying Macintosh" right? LOL~

Thanks for pointing that out...    :-)

i've never seen that box before... ever lol... idk what you're talking about... and ctrl+ is much more efficient (sp?).  take care

Posted by Dustin Nulf (Keller Williams Realty) almost 12 years ago

Brad - Are you sure 'the box' isn't a Firefox issue? I'm running IE7 on a PC. I just copied a couple of paragraphs from this post into a draft by using the menu bar commands, and all of the layout, formatting and links are just fine. Usually I use right click, but in this case I don't see anything different in the results.

Brad - I think I am married to the mousemaster he manages almost everything with the mouse except original input. oh!! and those silly little graphics that are sometimes required to post something

Posted by Kathy Clulow, Trusted For Experience - Respected For Results (RE/MAX All-Stars Realty Inc. Brokerage) almost 12 years ago

The mouse is powerful -- good to know that right click is good for something.  Actually, I learned this some time ago from a computer "nerd"!  It is a great little trick and saves a lot of time.  Now, all we need is for AR to make it easer to add color to text and change fonts and sizes of fonts -- (hint hint)!

I am a devotee of Firefox and have noticed that annoying pop up box that screws up the visual aspect of my cut and pasted info. I am a big Ctrl + c and Ctrl + v person so I like shortcuts. I will use the toolbar as that definitely seems like a more efficient shortcut than reformatting.

Hi Brad!  What a clever post--snagging the typed version, then showing what it turns into!  I've had that happen and realized with Firefox that if you just right-click and hit paste, it goes directly into the comment section.  Every now and then, I forget, hit ctrl-V and get that nagging pop-up window!

Your tips are always helpful.   I just right clicked your blog page and added to my favorites!

Posted by Marjorie Taylor, New Homes in St. Augustine Florida (Riverside Homes) almost 12 years ago

Brad, what Firefox tells me with the right click is that it doesn't allow copying and pasting, or something like that. When I want to cut and paste from my AR blog onto my website blog, I highlight, choose copy, and then I select paste from my Edit menu above. Otherwise, I have to do some workaround...and I'm not in the mood to do that. BUT it works...just my two cents.;-)
