The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

ActiveRain Widgets & The New and Approved HTML List

New and "Approved" means "Improved"

Having a network with 123,000 members poses this question, can our network handle this kind of volume and continued growth at this rate?  Yes it can!  However, there are some things that have had to be changed in order to build a better, more secured and stable platform.  Here's your update from the "ActiveRain Files" regarding Widgets and the New HTML approved list.

There are more widgets out there than we have members and new scripts and widgets are being created by the hundreds everyday.  Unfortunately, some of those widgets, scripts, and HTML codes can jeopardize and compromise our growing network.  After taking a serious and detailed look at these, we have come up with the Approved ActiveRain Widget and approved HTML List.

ActiveRain historically has not supported or endorsed third party sites and software applications that are used to create and write posts, grab the code, text, or HTML,  then copy and paste it to ActiveRain.  Fortunately, many of these have worked in the past and will continue to do so, but some outside sources of  HTML may no longer be compatible with our system.  We recommend creating new posts in the ActiveRain formats provided.  Security is our #1 priority to avoid malicious or viral causing scripts or code.

What Is A Widget?

Here are the approved Widgets for ActiveRain

This list only applies to "script" widgets.  Not all widgets have script codes in them.  If you do not see a widget that you are using here, and it is currently working on your Blog, then it is not a script widget that we have to worry about, and it is automatically an approved widget.  If your widget is not working, then chances could be that it has code or script in it that will not be allowed on the network.  It may also be that the widget was not installed properly, dare I say...operator error.  LOL~  Here's How To Add Widgets.

(Got Your Own Widget? Make suggestions here, but I can't guaranty they will get approved)

Here are the New "approved" HTML Tags for ActiveRain

Don't pass out on me now, this is important stuff.  I'll provide a link to each <tags> definition.  Beginners: What Is HTML?

a, abbr, acronym, address, b, big, blockquote, br, center, cite, code, dd, del, dfn, div, dt, em, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, hr, i, iframe, img, ins, kbd, li, object, ol, p, param, pre, samp, small, span, strong, sub, sup, table, tbody, td, tfoot, thead, tr, tt, ul, var.

For Font Sizes: Use the <h1-h6> tags, or in Wysiwyg mode, highlight your text then use the CTRL+1 thru CTRL+6 keys.

For Font colors: Use this html code now  <span style="color: #29d150;"> instead of this <font color="green"> Here's a link to some different color codes.   Still Lost or Confused?  Click Here

Look for enhancements and upgrades to the wysiwyg editor in the near future.

A Few New Fixed and Added Features

We updated the network last night and ran our maintenance & upgrades.  It will just keep getting better!!

  • Every 10 seconds, your draft posts are now being saved automatically.  No more lost posts from frozen browsers, accidentally clicking the back button, or just mistakenly clicking on that red x up in the right hand corner.
  • All hyperlinks in your posts should now open in a new window by default unless you change that option manually. Posts written with links in the last week or so will have to be manually corrected.
  • Twitter Feeds from ActiveRain Posts are now working again.
  • Links placed in comments will still work but have "no-follow" tags.  This allows members to place links that are related to the authors topic, but spamming will be useless.

Though you may have experienced some minor technical issues in the past, or will from time to time in the future, just know that we are restructuring and rebuilding a stronger, faster, secure network for our members.  Your support and patience is always appreciated, and your help and participation has been stellar.

Thanks for Building and Growing with us. Happy Holidays. :-)

Thanks for the update. Love some of the changes...but I'm totally stymied at the html code for fonts, colors and whatever all that other stuff is. Dang...can't wait for the upgrade to wysiwyg.

Very cute!, Bradley!

Now that we've reduced a few of the widgets here on AR, maybe your profile page will load faster?... Last time I clicked on it, I was able to mow the lawn, wash both cars, and talk to my Mom on the phone before it opened!  :)

Brad - Thanks for the update.  Love the "autosave" feature on the drafts.  I've lost a few things before as I made a mistake or something froze.  Luckily, the first time it happened I learned to do a lot of copying, just in case.  I actually have a few things on my desktop that are really ActiveRain stuff I'm working on...just didn't want to mess it up while doing 20 other things.

Marilyn and Vickie - I know my name's not Brad, but thought I'd let you know...postlets still are working on my blog.  The reason is that the postlets code is straight HTML, no scripts in it, so it falls under the approved list of HTML and not a widget.  Thought I'd help you out, since I'm sure Brad will be swamped with questions and comments.

Brad, I was writing a post this afternoon and notice the autosave- which saved me several times as I kept getting phone calls trying to finish one little blog.

Thanks for the HTML update, I haven't been able to figure that one out in a week. My wording isn't that great, so I have to make it "pretty", as my partner Craig says.

Thanks for your work- have a good weekend.

Bookmarked,

However, I don't get this part or what it means:

Don't pass out on me here, this is important stuff.  I'll provide a link to each code's definition.

a, abbr, acronym, address, b, big, blockquote, br, center, cite, code, dd, del, dfn, div, dt, em, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, hr, i, iframe, img, ins, kbd, li, object, ol, p, param, pre, samp, small, span, strong, sub, sup, table, tbody, td, tfoot, thead, tr, tt, ul, var.

For Font Sizes: Use the h1-h6 tags or in Wysiwyg mode, highlight text then use the CTRL+1 thru CTRL+6

For Font colors: Use this html code now  <span style="color: #29d150;"> instead of this <font color="green"> Here is a link to some of the different color codes.

As was discussed in one of my last 3-4 posts...some things are more technical than some of us that have not grown up with computer science courses understand.

I understand font size and colors, however, the stuff above?  Forgettaboutit..................

As I suggested to Bob...There needs to be Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior explanations of the technical information on here.  Yes, those members under 35-40 might have had some training, but those of us over 40...are self taught...unless you are a total techie like you guys...and I think I'm speaking for more people on here than will admit it.

Rich - that comment had me laughing like crazy!  S'pose Brad will see it??  ;-)  There's a few others that load slowly enough to allow all that and then some....

Brad - love the auto-save function.  I noticced that there earlier today and I thought I was seeing things.  I love that the widgets are being weened down some.  Too many pages were loading way too slowly because of the widgets on those pages.

Auto-save every 10 seconds!? Now that is awesome! I wasn't expecting that. What a fabulous idea. Thank you!

And my Copyscape button, HTML and CSS code header, and my Postlets are all working so I can't complain about that. I assume we can still embed videos, so I guess I don't have to worry about WellcomeMat. That would really suck if I had to go through all my previous posts, to find which ones had those videos in them, if they didn't work! The only I haven't checked is my "Slide" slide shows and "Rock You" slide shows. I really hope those are working!

Posted by Katharine Carey (eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Brad- The main reason I was writing in third party formats was because AR system shuts down too much and then you lose your post, but with the new auto save that I just saw working today, that solves that issue! Thanks for the auto save!

Brad - this is GREAT!!! You don't know how many posts I have lost due to accidentally pushing the wrong button. Sooo frustrating and yet I like to write in draft here rather than cut and paste. Since I'm widget-challenged, limiting the widgets is fine by me. But I'm learning! Hey, I actually read this post and

1. My head isn't spinning and

2. I wasn't compelled to say, "There you go again, Brad!"     So there is some progress at this end :)

Marianne - don't be stymied by the HTML, I put links to each one so you could learn what they mean and what they do.  I was hoping that would help.  Last year I didn't know anything about HTML, just ask Mike Mueller, he was my HTML mentor.  We didn't have posts like this back then. :-)

Fred - brain transplants are on back order.  But if you click on the links that took me hours to add..(LOL) you'll find easy to understand explanations for all these widgets and HTML codes.

Christine - that IS the coveted AR Widget Passport Card.  It's only a collectors item because Rich Jacobson (The Widget King) is on the cover with his posse!  :-)))

Brad my friend I think you went a bit over board with the widgets on your page. It loads slow and kind of clunky and the little spinny thing keeps going when I look at it indicating that it just keeps loading. I also get an additional plugins needed message in one browser.

Posted by Teresa Boardman (Boardman Realty) about 11 years ago

Seems like some much needed updates.  Glad to see AR is looking at the bigger pictures.

Posted by Brian Brumpton, Boise Idaho Real Estate (Keller Williams Boise) about 11 years ago

Hey Teresa - Not sure what "little spinny thing" you're referring to, I have nothing like that on my Blog or this page.  The additional plugin needed is probably because of the Mixpo video I have of you in SF on my sidebar.  My profile page, now that's a different story.  That's my ebook and may load slower than most.  Thanks for the heads up, I'm always looking to see how close I can come to crashing and breaking everything!  LOL~

Sharon - I'm like you, I write ALL my posts in ActiveRain now.  Love the draft save thingy.  Real Estate Shows works fine on AR as long as you are using the HTML embed codes.  We had a couple glitches last week, but we have since got all those corrected.

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Not happy about the removal of statcounter. It was a very useful tool for me. : (

Sandra - I totally understand and can respect your disappointment.  Somehow deep down though, I know what you can be happy about, and that is we'll be here tomorrow, and the next day, and your Blog and it's contents will be safe and secured?!?  It's a sacrifice indeed, and one we feel that had to be made.

There are other solutions than just statcounter out there, I will try and research to see what alternatives there are for you ok? :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Linda - HTML isn't something you'll learn in a week, but with all the links I provided to the HTML tag definitions, you should be able to grasp a better understanding of what each allowable tag means and does.  You can always contact me if you need any assistance at all with this stuff.  I'm really inexpensive!  :-))

Karen Monsour - with the number of members we have on AR these days, I know you'll agree we have a wide variety of levels of experience both technical and non-technical.  Some of my friends and readers here have been asking for this post as they have had issues with using their widgets, script codes, HTML etc. that come from other sources like Real Estate shows, vFlyer, postlets, statcounter, and the list goes on and on.  We have made some changes to the AR Network, and this is to inform members of what those changes are.

With all due respect, this may be a bit over some peoples heads, I understand that, this is why I spent hours creating the links to help members like yourself learn and understand this stuff.  I even went in and added a couple extra links just for YOU.  Here is a site that teaches the basics of HTML and it was shared with me by a 12 year old 7th grader.  No sense in me re-creating what others have already done for you.

              Beginners: What Is HTML?          What are HTML <tags>      Still Lost or Confused?  Click Here

WEB3SCHOOLS (the best things in life are free) is a great place for you to start getting your arms around this stuff and start learning.  I do hope you'll take the time to advance your knowledge, it's not going away and is to your benefit to invest a small amount of your time to research and expand your level of knowledge and expertise.  (like all of us have to do at some point) I can try to teach you, but I can't make you do it, and I can't do it for you.  :-)

If all else fails, you know where to find me, and I am available for hire as your coach or consultant.  There's FREE, then there's ME!  707 718-6773

Dan - LOL~  It is a pretty short list I know, but at least it's a list that's been approved and won't be a threat to us or the network.  This post took me literally hours to create, so I'm glad the list and links are short!!!  :-))))

Steve - 3 weeks should be plenty of time.  The beauty of AR is that members can learn in weeks what took other members months or even years to learn.  It's the sharing of information and experience that makes this place soooo powerful.  "People Helping People" that's my motto.  :-))

You always write the best blogs!  Some of them I even understand! I have bookmarked for when I can devote time to look at everything.  Hey, I have widgets that I entered a long time ago that never worked.  I'm pretty sure that me you are talking about with operator error! SIGH...

Posted by Evelyn Johnston, The People You Know, Like and Trust! (Friends & Neighbors Real Estate) about 11 years ago

I'm slowly learning the html tags. Lani made me learn some at AgentGenius. (Not made but encouraged.) LOL She calls them funny names to make her remember so that has helped me too.

I was actually thinking of taking a class at my community college. Of course Allyssa who is 18 and majoring in graphics knows most of them. When I get stuck I bring her in and she does a few things and it works.

Problem is she doesn't want to teach me.............too busy. She is self taught and is board in most of her graphic classes. She uses the MAC and that is what I will have next time I see you. (((fingers crossed)))

Anyway I get your Techno Blog first before I come here, so I saved it there to play with this.

Thanks for 1) auto save 2) getclicky staying around 3) for giving so much of yourself to this community above and beyond what anyone could ask or think.

You were born for this job.

So what is it about Statcounter that makes it unsafe?  I've used it for years on my sites.  I know that Wordpress.com won't allow javascript thus I can only use an abbreviated verson of statcounter on my wp blog....will the html version of statcounter not work either?  Or is it just the javascript version?

The Javascript version of course is more robust, but the html is better than nothing, will that work too?

And an off the cuff response to those who are confounded by all the HTML tags: my opinion is, if you don't know what they are, you probably don't really need them and can get along fine without them unless you really want to get into detailed design.

Brad - Not a problem.  I wish I had been drinking egg nog and answering questions.  That's like a little slice of heaven for me!  I figured there were some people who needed to know about postlets (so many people use it, so it probably scared lots of people to think it might not work), so by letting them know as soon as I saw it, I figured I could probably prevent a few agents from jumping off of large bridges into the depths below.  I was even going to chime in on the RealEstateShows questions, but you beat me to the punch.  I was one of the panicked ones sending in support requests here and to Jeff when mine suddenly went blank and when I looked at the code...they were stripped of everything.  After coding my post in html and then watching it get stripped, I was ready to find a bridge myself.  Thanks again Brad.

  • First: Jon Washburn for creating and founding AR.
  • Second: Bob Stewart for hiring me! LOL~
  • Third: Rich Jacobson, for having too many widgets and causing all the ruckus..  hehehe..
    (Love ya Rich)
  • Fourth: Claire Cruver, for keeping us all in line, paying the bills,  and for keeping the ship afloat
  • Fifth: Jeff Corbett, for his great looks, kharisma, experience, and knowledge
  • Sixth:... and in this case most importantly...

***Jorgen Hahn***

Credit should be given where credit is due.  Jorgen is the man who makes all these things work on AR.  He is behind the scenes mostly, but without him, much of these upgrades and enhancements would not be possible.  Be sure to thank Jorgen and the entire team anytime you get the chance, in fact....I think we all have paypal accounts!!  LOL~  :-)))

Posted by Alexander Harb, Dallas, Texas Real Estate Investing (Knights Investing) about 11 years ago

Well Brad....this is a stumper.....

I tried <table bgcolor="color"> and the AR HTML editor did NOT use it...the command was still there, but it did not execute it.

I also tried <bodybg color="color"> and the AR HTML editor stripped it from the command structure......and obviously it did not execute if it was stripped....like I have stated before...I have been told by other AR members that the Blog Customizer is doing this......

I don't know if it is true.... you guys will have to look into it...I do NOT have the access to prey behind the AR veil....... If I did...I MIGHT be able to find out what is going on.....

BUT....I do NOT get paid for it either..... so I say, "Let the other guys handle this".......

I hope the guys at Daneko(sp) have a handle on it......

Let me know what happens.... I am sure a LOT of other members would like to know about this....
So they can,"Pretty up" their posts......

I'll see ya on Monday, Brad.......take a rest for "The Lords Day"......

Lets Gods love smile through you!!!

Brad--

Maybe you can explain the difference between AR Statistics and Sitemeter stats. Or, for that matter, any other 3rd party stat widget.

On AR Statistics, a new post might register 12 views and 10 clicks within the first 15 minutes. But Sitemeter only registers 2 pageloads in the same time period. Statcounter also had the same problem.

Thanks for any clarification,

Judy

Posted by Judy Chapman (Referral Network of Illinois LLC) about 11 years ago

Brad, I have been absent from AR for the most part for several months due to the drama related to my outside blog...once we are all safely moved, there will be many posts about the craziness and huge toll it has taken on us.  In the meantime, I stopped by to read your posts so that I can catch up.  Trust me, after all that I and other have been through I can honestly say I now have an idea of what you guys at AR deal with on a daily basis.  You are truly incredible and I for one in so grateful to be a part of this group.  Thank you!

Judy - I have found the AR stats to be very unreliable for page views - it counts every time you reload your own page; I tried it once to see and sure enough, it registers me every time.  With statcounter I could exclude my IP address so I didn't distort my stats every time I replied to comments or edited my page.  Guaging visits by clicks is slightly better but it still won't be as accurate and robust as Statcounter.

This is why I'm particularly annoyed that Statcounter is removed and nobody will tell me exactly what it is about Statcounter that makes it "unsafe."

Posted by Karen Rice, Northeast PA & Lake Wallenpaupack Home Sales (Davis R. Chant, REALTORS) about 11 years ago

Karen - We took a closer look at StatCounter, and we won't be able to allow it on the network in its current state. Here's why:

<!-- Start of StatCounter Code -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var sc_project=4258968;
var sc_invisible=1;
var sc_partition=34;
var sc_click_stat=1;
var sc_security="27a515aa";
</script>

It relies on the execution of arbitrary javascript, which we do not allow any longer. This is why StatCounter was removed  from the list of allowed <script> widgets.  Sorry you are annoyed by our decision, but I think you would be even more annoyed by some of the results and problems these types of scripts could cause us ALL in the future.  I'm sure with some effort from us both, we can find an alternate solution.

Karen and Others,

There's an 'html only' version of statcounter, which I've been using all along. So while it may not be as robust as the Java version (and I can only guess what I've been missing!), it's still a solid performer and will give you some valuable statistics.

Judy - thanks for pointing out an alternate solution for StatCounter using the "HTML Only" version.  I hope this will be a good alternative to the javescript widget.  I appreciate you looking out for our members like Karen and others.  You're the bomb.  :-)

Brad, this post is a keeper!!!  Thanks so much for explaining it all...I didn't know what html was about 2 months ago, hoping to follow in your footsteps and have the hang of it within the year...LOL!  Many many thanks!!!

Amy - way to stick with it.  I still am learning HTML to this day, and I too hope to be better off in the future due to research and all the learning efforts. Thanks for commenting, just kno you're not alone.  :-)

I noticed the auto save earlier tonight and was very excited.  I get some of the rest of the stuff, which is very exciting as 6 months ago I would've been totally lost instead of somewhat lost.

Christine - in time, it does all start making sense, but you do have to apply yourself and have the desire to want to learn. You have come a long way, I still remember our first phone call, yes, you have come a long way!  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) almost 11 years ago

The HTML version of Statcounter is not very robust and it doesn't know you from anyone else, so again your own visits to your blog will bloat your stats.  It also does not tell you what keywords/search terms visitors used to find your site.

What would be really helpful is if AR would implement stats like Wordpress.com has - on Wordpress your own visits to the blog are not counted when you are logged in, and it will tell you what search terms were used to find the blog, and it will give referrers. Then I wouldn't care about Statcounter being lost.

The reason I want to know what search terms people used is to be able to know which direction I should take blogging.  I found that someone was searching for tax sales in my area; I then wrote a blog about buying property at tax sale, and got a listing because of it (by someone who bought their property at tax sales.)

So while I may sound whiny and petty about this my whole point is to get business from my blog and to do that I need to know what my audience is searching for.  I really don't care HOW MANY visitors I have as much as WHY  OR HOW DID THEY COME TO MY BLOG.

Brad I didn't even know what a widget was/is?  So thank you I'll goggle it and find out more to get up to speed,  I'm trying !   I think I can, I think I can !   Jane

Jane - I have a link in this post that will define a widget.  It's actually a video that will help explain a widget, how it works, and their purpose.  You can also Google it, you'll find a great deal of information that you'll find helpful in dealing with these little gadgets and gizmos.  -  I know you can, I know you can!  (wink wink)  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) almost 11 years ago

Karen - Thanks for your reply, and believe me, I really do understand and recognize the value of this widget.

You have made it very clear the value it brings to you and your blog.  We get that.  I am very sympathetic and wish there was more I could do, but by the same token, I hope you understand our position on this, and the risk we take by using these javascripts widgets as I explained above in an earlier comment to you.  This final decision to the best of my knowledge, is not a negotiable one. I apologize.

Thanks for understanding, and I say this with the utmost respect and confidence, we can and will find a widget or tool at some point that will get you the results you desire.  We are a very diverse community and network with many intelligent staff and resourceful members.  So have faith in the netowrk that you have entrusted all this time and up to this point.

In our search together, we can find solutions, let's try to move forward now and find resolve.  :-)

BTW - I like your idea, and maybe this is something our programmers can implement in the future: "What would be really helpful is if AR would implement stats like Wordpress.com has - on Wordpress your own visits to the blog are not counted when you are logged in, and it will tell you what search terms were used to find the blog, and it will give referrers. Then I wouldn't care about Statcounter being lost."

HI Brad, just wanted to let you know that I tried loading Google Analytics in my settings and I get an error that says I've exceeded 100 words...yikes :-)

Kris - here's why, you already have the max allowed text in that area of your my settings page.  You can move that text to another area, like to the other description box or to your profile, this will free up the space you'll need.

I just looked at your Blog and noticed all the text you have placed there.  Any HTML you add to your side bar does NOT count as text.  This should resolve your problem.  :-)  Let me know if you need some help.  :-)

Brad,

Thanks for putting mine back but quite frankly sometimes I'll go to someones blog and it takes forever to load the page...by the time it does...I'm gone...too many cause my PC to lock up...I think it is nice to have some as long as it is in moderation.

Neal - great point and I agree, mine I'm sure is one to include, and you're just being nice by putting it that way! LOL~  Moderation is the key, but value to your readers and visitors should be equally as important.

Thanks for waiting the time it took to load my blog so you could leave this comment.  You're a good man! :-)

Missy - all I can say to that comment is "Thank You So Much!"  I'm looking forward to your calls about your "NEW MAC!" LOL~  I am really enjoying mine now.  The AR staff (Thanks Jon, Bob, and Claire) just sent me a large monitor so I could better multi-task and at the same time, save my eyes.

I love my MAC and will now try to relocate 100% to it's much easier environment.

I want you to know how much I appreciate our friendship and what it's developed into.  If Allyssa is ever too busy, you know you'll always still have me!  :-)

Brad,

I originally installed the html version of StatCounter because I'd read somewhere that AR didn't accept Javascript. Had I known I could have slipped it in and reaped the benefits, I would have! In which case, I'd now be on Karen's side and want something equally as good to track visits. So please see what you and the other AR gods can do. ;-)

Judy

Brad, I realize I sounded very angry with my bolded words, and I wasn't trying to give that impression; I was just trying to add emphasis.

I guess I was surprised that Statcounter was dropped simply because I know so many on AR used it and several of us spoke up about it previously when you asked for a rundown of what applications we really had to have.  ;)

Are the automatic music players going to be disabled?  (please please please...)  LOL.

I understand that just becuase I want something doesn't mean I'm going to get it...but I also have learned that many things could have changed simply because someone spoke up about it - and I also wanted to give my reason for wanting Statcounter; it wasn't just a "whine for the sake of whining" if that makes sense....

I don't really like whining, but I do believe in speaking up - and it's a fine line to walk between the two.  I'm sure others - particularly those who don't care about statcounter - will perceive me as whining about it (much like I'd feel about someone being upset if the music players weren't allowed anymore...LOL)

This long verbose comment is just to say that I'm not mad, I'm not whining, I'm not even really complaining; just stating why I feel the way I do about STatcounter and hope that maybe something comparable will be made available to us that is as useful and robust as Statcounter. (That's why I mentioned the Wordpress stats; Wordpress.com is very strict as well with what they allow; but the stats they provide are pretty good!)

Anyway, sorry - sorry to ramble and sorry to seem snotty.  SOmetimes those of us who know what we want and REALLY WANT what we want come off a little too strongly...for that I apologize.

Jeff - as I explained above in the comments here, we took a closer look at StatCounter, and we won't be able to allow it on the network in its current state. Here's why:

<!-- Start of StatCounter Code -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var sc_project=4258968;
var sc_invisible=1;
var sc_partition=34;
var sc_click_stat=1;
var sc_security="27a515aa";
</script>

It relies on the execution of arbitrary javascript, which we no longer allow.  I am researching to see what compatible website trackers and stat programs are out there that might be equally as good or better than statcounter.  Maybe AR should just create our own and incorporate it into the statistic section of members Blogs. Hmmm...  still researching all the options at this point.  Thanks Jeff.

Judy - AR stats are built in and part of our network designed by us.  It's not a very robust tracking or stats module, but there is value to it.  Sitemeter, Statcounter, Google Analytics, Active Meter etc. are all 3rd party applications that are often used by website and Blog owners to track more in depth statistics.

"On AR Statistics, a new post might register 12 views and 10 clicks within the first 15 minutes. But Sitemeter only registers 2 pageloads in the same time period. Statcounter also had the same problem."

The reason these numbers conflict is because one of them (AR) includes how many times you have veiwed your own post, this is why some wish to use outside stat counters so your own hits won't show or count.  I hope this helps. Thanks.  :-)

Craig - that was hilarious!!  Love the "Future Photo" my friend.  I feel like that now...well....on somedays!  LOL~

To center your youtube video in a post, use the HTML center tag:

When you embed the youtube video on your Blog post, there will be a bunch of html code:  there's two easy steps to center your video.

1.  At the beginning of the video html code, add this  <center>  (this tells the code to be centered)

2.  At the end of the video html code, add this  </center>  (this stops the centering)

Example:  It will look like this

<center><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/69ZM7d1qKF4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/69ZM7d1qKF4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></center>

Okay, well, you didn't ask but I'm gonna tell you anyway.  there are two things I would LOVE in my AR Stocking This Year:

  1. Slightly more robust stats that don't count my own visits & tell me what terms were used to find me. that's about it.

  2. The ability to switch back and forth between WYSIWYG and HTML mode without having to save, then open and possibly save again then open (when I switch from HTML to WYSIWYG, the WYS window opens up VERY SMALL and I have to save again, then click edit again.)

I assure you, I will never ask for anything ever again.  Ever.  Not even for a gold star.

****ANNOUNCEMENT ALERT & Micro Blog Post****

For all of you using statcounter previously. I have good news!  This may not have the same features and tools, then again, it may have MORE!  I wasn't using statcounter, so only YOU can compare, but I think you're going to like this one...and how appropriate to be named:

ActiveMeter!!

No, this is not an ActiveRain Widget or something we created, it just ironically is called ACTIVEmeter.  Try it out, I have tested it the past 3 days, it works, and it's FREE.  These screen shots are for those of you interested.  I Hope it will be a good replacement for you.  You can also check out sitemeter.com as an alternative.  Compare them yourself, enjoy!!  :-)

Disappointed about StatCounter so I will give the Active Meter and SiteMeter a review and see which one works out.  I can't believe it but a couple of weeks ago I was having problems installing StatCounter and sent you an email and you said 'no problemo just install it' but it was making the main page go haywire!  At least I now know I wasn't loosing my marbles!

Teri - I'm still house blog cleaning.  The ribbon in the upper right is easy to add.  There's a link in my Top Picks for 2008 post.  The other is one that I get to use for admin/support purposes, it's not an approved widget.  Have a great weekend.  I would have responded sooner, this was my first chance back here.  :-))

Every 10 seconds, your draft posts are now being saved automatically.  No more lost posts from frozen browsers, accidentally clicking the back button, or just mistakenly clicking on that red x up in the right hand corner.

I don't like that feature because sometimes I write more than one blog entry at a time in multiple tabs...

You know, you start one and don't finish it, but you get a good idea when you sit down and work on it before you go back to the first one because you may not have time to complete the first one...

Posted by Benjamin Clark, Buyer's Agent - Certified Negotiation Expert (Homebuyer Representation, Inc.) almost 11 years ago

For Font Sizes: Use the <h1-h6> tags, or in Wysiwyg mode, highlight your text then use the CTRL+1 thru CTRL+6 keys.

Note that when you use these, your localism posts are all messed up because the line height in localism doesn't change to accommodate the larger font associated with these tags...

Posted by Benjamin Clark, Buyer's Agent - Certified Negotiation Expert (Homebuyer Representation, Inc.) almost 11 years ago

I'm not complaining, just pointing out these things I have noticed.

Posted by Benjamin Clark, Buyer's Agent - Certified Negotiation Expert (Homebuyer Representation, Inc.) almost 11 years ago

And I still want to know how you got the localism banner on the upper right corner (and it's clickable).

Perhaps that's what this post is trying to tell me...

Can we use these html tags EVERYWHERE (Profile boxes, settings settings, etc.) and not just in blog entries?

Benjamin - not sure I understand, I would see this as a good feature as it's saving your multiple posts in multiple tabs or locations. What I don't like is that when I make a mistake, accidentally delete the wrong picture or paragraph, it saves every 10 secs., and I can't use the "Undo".

It has Javascript...can you check it out?

Posted by Jeff R. Geoghan, REALTOR, Marketing Manager (Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage) almost 11 years ago

Jeff - try it out, if it works, then it's fine, if it doesn't work then let me know and I'll have the programmers look at it.  I'm not a programmer so the call isn't mine on this one.  If it's a safe and non-malicious javascript. it shouldn't be any problem.

RSS feeds, etc...  never even heard the word widget before except as a joke company product in a 1950's film...  So, like several others I will bookmark, well actually I haven't figured that out yet so I will do what I've been doing up til now - cut and paste your blog inot a word documentg to review later...  thanks for your amazing and neverending (I am going backwards to all your blogs) font of relevant information.

I love the AR community, and know that any changes that are made to it are only for the benefit of its users.  You can just tell that the powers that be in AR have the interest of the users as their top priority.  It is such a sharing community, there is nothing else quite like AR out there.

Brad, I've tried adding the google analytics to my AR blog.  I've tried both scripts (new) and (legacy), adding them to the top of blog description under settings, yet when I go back to google, it says that the tracking is not installed, even with a recheck.  Can someone please help me hold my tongue right so I can get this working?  Thanks

Posted by Roger Johnson, Realtor - Hickory NC Real Estate (Hickory Real Estate Group) almost 11 years ago

Roger - google analytics has been working on some AR blogs and not others.  I'm not sure why this has been an issue.  You might want to contact the tech support from google analytics and see if there is anything they can tell you after they review your Blog and request.  Let me know what you find out.  Thanks.

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) almost 11 years ago

Contacting Googe tech support is easier said than done.  Apparently, if you actually want to email/call someone that works there (vs. just posting in a forum), it's gonna cost you.  So, I guess it's off to find something else that may work, any suggestions?

On an off-topic note: How do you get the yellow background on your reply comments?  It looks much better than the pale grey/green of most blogs?  Thanks

Posted by Roger Johnson, Realtor - Hickory NC Real Estate (Hickory Real Estate Group) almost 11 years ago

Roger - not like that here at ActiveRain is it, or should I send you a bill?  lol~  There are some other trackers out there, you might want to search our approved widgets and HTML post, I think there may be some in there.  If you need a link, look in the Help/faq group, or check out the AR Guide at ActiveRainGuide.com.  There's also a tutorial link on my profile.  Thanks.

BTW - All AR Staff comments are yellow, and all authors are Blue on their own Blogs.

Christine, Real Estate Shows does have a widget. Not sure why it's not on this list. In fact, we have a widget for every category of Show you wish to include. It is found at the top of each category page in your manage and edit section of your account.

The code will be in this format:

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" width="200" height="250" id="slideshow" align="middle">
    <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
    <param name="allowFullScreen" value="false" />

    <param name="FlashVars" value="userid=43&catid=1" />
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.realestateshows.com/show/slideshow.swf" />
    <param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
    <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
<embed src="http://www.realestateshows.com/show/slideshow.swf" quality="high" wmode="transparent" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="200" height="250" name="slideshow" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" FlashVars="userid=43&catid=1" />
    </object>

You can see what they look like at http://res.realestateshows.com down the right side of the blog. :)

Posted by Jeff Turner (RealSatisfied) about 10 years ago

Hey Jeff - It's not on the list because as I explained in paragraph 4, "This list only applies to "script" widgets.  Not all widgets have script codes in them."  Thanks for popping in to help out Christine, I appreciate that and I know she does too.

Thanks!

Posted by Chrissy Doremus ~ US Inspect ~, Residential Property Inspections (US Inspect) over 9 years ago

Widget Box widgets site may be having some issues creating a script error on your AR Blog.  Sometimes third party widget sites that are having down time or errors will reflect and show where ever they are placed. The other issue may be that the widget you've slected has a javascript code that is not compatible with our platform.  :-)

Hi - I got the paid subscription to Widgetbox before reading this post.  Everytime I create a widget in Widgetbox and try to paste it into my AR side bar, I get the "no script" version. I have tried a handful of different widgets.  Should I be using another service instead of Widgetbox?  Is it my settings?  Any thoughts?  I will also submit to tech support in case this isn't the right place for this question. Hi Valerie - just make sure that there is no javascripts in the widgets you're selecting, many of them are not approved on the AR network as they can have malicious repercussions.
