The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

How To Create an ActiveRain Outside ActiveBlog - 10 Easy Steps

How To Create A New ActiveRain Outside Blog for an Individual, Group, or Team.

I'll demonstrate how to set one up from scratch.  Following these steps correctly should have you setup in about 15 minutes including invitations out to your desired contributors.

1) Make sure you are Logged into ActiveRain.

2) Click on the "My Home" link located at the top of your screen in the upper right corner.

3) Click on the "Outside Blog" link located on the left hand sidebar of your "My Home" page.

4) Next, Click on the "Sign Up" button:

5)  Just Fill out the details in this section below:

Blog Name, Description, Select Theme, Credit Card Info, and Click Create Blog
(If your credit card info is not currently on file, you'll be prompted and need to enter it.)

5) Selecting the "THEME" of your choice from the "Theme Library".  There are some themes that are not branded with a company name: Elements of SEO, Legacy, Blue Days, Black Tie, Easy Going etc.  The Chameleon Theme has CSS Styling Capabilites.  These are available to use if your company theme is not listed.  More company themes and non-branded themes are coming...

Your Team Blog has now been created.

To start posting to your new Individual or group Blog, just click on the link "Write a Blog Post"

on your "My Home" page and begin writing a new post.  NOTE: Your posts are still created in ActiveRain, but before submitting them, be sure to click on the check box to add them to your OUTSIDE Blog.  You can also add previously written posts by going to a post, select edit, then check the box to add it to your Outside Blog.

You will also receive an email that confirms the creation of your new Blog.  There will be a link to the temporary internal site (ie: 09567de4.ActiveRain.com) Click on this Blog link in your email, and you can now go in and customize your Blog with your own domain name that ActiveRain will host, or you can add a domain name that you have previously purchased.

(YES, ActiveRain Hosts Domain Names Now)

NOTE: Only enter a domain name in the "DOMAIN" box at the bottom if you already own one.  This would be a name that you have previously purchased and wish to use.  (this can't be a domain where you already have data in use) If you do select an outside existing domain name, you will need to click on the blue link that says "HOW DOES THIS WORK"  This will show you the information you'll need to give to the site where you purchased your domain name.  example: TheRealEstateScoop.com purchased from GoDaddy.com etc.

7) Take a deep breath, you're almost done...

Once you click on the update domain button, you're done, now you're ready to use the toolbar below for additional features, and then it's time to invite other contributers, add listing router, create links, widgets and more.

8) If you chose to Invite other members as contributors to your team/group Blog, click on the "Members" link:  The following screen will appear:  You can add them as Editors, Authors, or just Contributors.  AR Team Blogs and Individual Blogs are the same thing, the only difference is if you wish to have multiple contributors or not.

9) To invite another member to contribute to your Blog, just enter their ActiveRain Profile user name which can be found on their profile page.  It will be up in the URL box or Address bar.  Example: (ActiveBrad)  The member you invite will get a message on their "My Home" page that will look like this:

They can choose to accept or decline your invitation.  If they accept, their photo will be automatically added to the new blog as a frequent contributor, and they'll have the ability to start posting or moving posts over immediately.  To see an example of an Individual Blog setup, check out Bill Gassett's outside Blog at MassRealEstateVoice.com.  Look at how the "RAINdexing" on his site is already working wonders with all his previously written content.  Also, See Bill's Post on Individual Blogs.

To see a group Blog, go to ActiveRainGuide.com or ActiveRainTeam.com to compare a multi-authored Blog.

10) You will be able to modify, edit, make changes, add listing router, create links and more by simply using the toolbar options at the top of your new outside Blog page.  I apologize for this extremely long tutorial post, but these are the steps you'll need to go through to create your NEW ActiveBlogs.

One of the things this price includes is support from myself and the AR staff and team.  Plus you'll get BIG SEO, RAINdexing, Themes, Wider bandwidthWidgets, and the ability to mange your invited contributors.  We're here to help, but if you follow these instructions, you'll probably never need us.  Need more details?  Here's How To Create & Maximize Your Outside Blog.   Here's 5 Ways you could use a group or team Blog.

HI Brad, Being the technophobe that I am I really appreciate your posts. I checked out Bill's new blog to see what it can look like when you decide to go ahead with this latest offering from AR. I have hesitated so far to do it as I seem to always have trouble making these things work. Thank goodness there is a wealth of people here on AR to help.

Brad...thanks for a great post this morning.  I got to work early thinking, "I've got to help my broker set up his new AR blog..." and here's your post!  Awesome!

Ben - if you need any assistance, just let me know.  Your Broker owes you bigtime for introducing this and helping get it off the ground.  There are many Brokers and teams that are jumping on this opportunity, the benefits will become much more clear as these group blogs are built and indexed by the search engines.  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) over 10 years ago

Russell - these will be even more motivational once you start receiving some of the benefits of having one.  If you think the AR Free Blogs did well, just wait and see what these will do for you.

Tony and Darcy - thank you, your comment and confirmation is appreciated.

Diane - the beauty is that you can have your own domain name, AR will even host it, you'll get a ton of SEO just as you have with your AR blog posts, and we're here to help and support our members.  The themes are great, and we'll be adding more for the branded franchises and also for those who just want to have or create a custom brand or group theme.  These will only get better in time, especially now that we've killed the infamous "Proxy Error"  :-))

Michelle - another great thing about these Individual and group blogs is that you don't have to learn a new Blogging platform.  Nothing changes when creating posts for these blogs, and you only need to check a box to have them show up in your outside Blogs.  I work with alot of people who just don't get or have time to learn wordpress, blogger, and some of the other outside Blogs that are available.  This really is a sweet deal!!  :-0

Mara - That was my bad, I probably should have put more information about how to use the themes, but this post was already 7 feet long.  lol~

Here's the deal:  You can use the "Elements of SEO" theme, or the "Legacy" theme.  Neither of these are branded to a company or franchise.  They were created for exactly what you're talking about.  You can add your own banners, logos, branding, image etc.  I can show you how to customize your own banners and images to use with your outside Blogs.  When you're ready to go, just let me know.  707 718-6773  :-)

Joan - I sure hope so, these dog gone tutorials take forever to create, I would only hope that our members will benefit from the time and effort that goes into them.  :-)

Lori - Congrats on getting yours all setup.  I'd love to check it out, send me a link or leave one in the comments here so we can get you some clicks and visitors.  Let me know if you need any help ok?  Thanks.

Silvia - There's even more to this outside blog concept like "RAINdexing" and the power of "SEO" and how it's going to benefit our members, but I just ran out of room in this post.  The best testimonials will come from the success of others who are using these now, not from me telling everyone why they need to do this, or that "you don't want to miss out on this!"  :-)

Steve - sleep is over-rated, there's plenty of time for that in the end!  haha..  I like the Aerosmith song that says "I don't want to miss a thing!"

James - the simpler we can make it, the better it is for all. Thanks my friend.

Steve - I hope you'll give this a shot, it's better to be a pioneer (IMHO) than to be a follower trying to catch up.  Just like the ones who have avoided joining this network, they'll soon learn that they'll wish they had, and that the window of opportunity may have been missed.  Those here now are building huge banks and library's of local content for their communities and for the search engines. (Just Look at Bill Gassett's Outside Blog) Can you imagine the time and effort it's going to take those folks when the realize the power of Blogs and networks like ActiveRain?

Brad, I have two outside blogs that i was in the process of setting up...both with godaddy domain names directed towards my wordpress blogs....how does that work if I want to set up an individual outside blog but keep my settings and everything on wordpress?  Or do I have to chuck wordpress and re-direct my domain to active rain?  I already own the domain names and want to keep them...can you help explain that to me?  Thanks.

Posted by Sonja Adams (Samson Proprties) over 10 years ago

Brad, okay I've decided to do this but I need your help.

To start, do I just go to the left hand side of MY HOME page and click on where it says to upgrade this blog now. It only takes me to the payment method. NOt the info  that you list above in your tutorial.

Or

Do I go to the individual blog section as outlined about and fill in the info.

I am not interested in starting a whole new blog right away. I just want the one I have here on AR upgraded.

Thanks for your help in this. :)

Brad - I went ahead and signed up...but It looks like I have to get rid of my wordpress blogs then, right?

Sonja - this has no bearing on your wordpress blogs or domain names.  You can create individual or group Blogs on AR and still have your wordpress blogs too. (you'd need to create new domain names which are included in the price) If you wanted to use an existing domain name that you purchased, you can have your AR outside Blog be that domain name, as long as you aren't using it for something else or on another platform already.

The only reason you would have to get rid of the wordpress blog is if you wanted that domain name to be pointed to AR instead of wordpress.  Let me know if you need any more help.  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) over 10 years ago

Michelle - you'll need to click on the red upgrade link as you mention, once your credit card info is on file, the rest of these screen shots will come into play.  Mine was already on file so I apologize that part of it was not included here.

You would not need to go fill out the info unless you wanted to create a new individual or group blog.  The existing one can be upgraded but then you will need to go in and pick a theme, give it a domain name, a description, add banners, and move or create posts to add to it.  Whatever you already have there will be moved over automatically.

If you'd like, before you click on the upgrade link, you can call me and I could walk you through it.  :-)

Hi Brad,

I am glad that I waited to do this.  The tutorial will help alot.  I missed when reading your post that the price of the blog included a url.  I just went to godaddy and purchased a new one.  Oh well.

I have a few questions:

If I start with an individual blog and want to go to a Team Blog, can you easily swap it over?

Will the content we post on AR also go onto the new outside blog or do we need to post that separately?

I have been using NVU to create my posts and then I bring them over to AR.  I have been having alot of trouble with it lately.  The AR editor is changing things substantially.  It looks perfect in NVU and then entirely diferent once I put it into the AR html editor.  Is there something you like better than NVU.  I would really love guidance on this.

I will watch to see how the AR and public takes it as the price is a tough pill to swallow for blogging.  We shall see.  Many thanks for the detailed info........

HI Brad, I clicked on the upgrade Brad, when it asks for the domain name I wish to have is that where I put in my website domain name which I own OR do I assign a new name for the blog? Pls clarify.

If I think of a name for the blog and add a new domain name , do I change the link on my website to my AR blog to this new domain name? Or does the old link still work and this is in addition to that link?

If you are in California you are 3 hours behind my time and I don't think you want me to call you that early! :)

Tim - take the pill!  :-)  The public and google liked our members AR Blogs, they're going to love our Outside ActiveBlogs!  Let me know when you'd like to invest into your own domain and ActiveBlog.

Missy - you can have them contact me as far as getting this setup, the content will have to be mandated and driven by the Broker and the agents, I may be able to help there too.

Sonja - great talking with you yesterday, you know I'm here if you need. :-)

Lisa - you can change your picture and banner but that's about all you could ever do with the subdomain FREE blogs, you can still feed content to your outside Blog by just checking the box when you create new posts.

Hi Brad, just wanted to let everyone know here on AR that I spent over an hour with Brad today to get my outside blog going (my fault as I know very little about these things). Do not let this stop you from taking this step. Brad is the most patient facilitator I have ever worked with. If you want to grow your business you need Brad in your corner. Take him up on the  help and you won't look back! You will be a leader and way ahead of your competition. Thanks Brad. You're AWESOME!  And just so you know, I hardly ever say awesome.

@Michelle - and I saw your new upgraded blog and it is AWESOME!  Great job!

I too, spent over an hour with Brad today - I couldn't seem to follow the simple directions to get my upgraded outside blog.  Once ActiveBrad and ActiveBob fixed my mistakes it was a piece of cake.  And Brad made a raindrop header for me and then sent me to Picnik to make my own custom header - which I am about to finish tonight.

My blog already looks great and hopefully by tomorrow, I will have my new header on it.  It automatically geotags my posts - it is like having my very own localim page.  Cool!

The listing router right on my blog is a super bonus.

What was I waiting for????  19 bucks - I spend that much on Mcdonald's cookies every month!

@Virginia - Your blog and Michelle's both look really awesome!!  Thanks for your patience and support in getting it all put together.  I can't wait to see some of your posts in the future about your successes with it.  I am confident that this will allow you to have as many cookies from McDonalds as you like in the future due entirely to your new blog!  (Big Smile) :-)

Barbara - it's not really another Blog, it's an option to take the one you already have to the next level if you like. You can always start a new one too, but many are using their existing content on AR and pushing it over to the new outside blogs.  They look great, the raindexing is instant and automatic, and there are many different options in customizing them.  Don't think about it, just go for it!  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) over 10 years ago

Dean - they are both easy to setup.  I understand conserving dough my friend, especially in these times, but ROI is crucial for any business, and I see this as a small tiny investment compared to the return and results you'll receive for the cost.

If you think the FREE AR Blog kicks @$$, wait till you see what these dedicated domain name blogs will do.

Hey Tina - you are correct in that the team or group Blogs are still at a single domain name with multiple contributors. We are not much different than WP in that you can have multiple Blogs here with individual domain names as well.  Best of both worlds.  :-))  Your single AR post can now be on AR, or Localism, or on your Outside Individual Blog, or your Group Blog...or all four.

Brad... Thanks for the post.  You've sold me.  I'm setting mine up ASAP.  Just a couple of questions.

If I pick a new domain name, which I likely will, what happens to my old Active Rain outside blog on another domain name which i already owned?  Will anything be auto-posted to it, or will it just be dormant with the domain available to use for another purpose?

Does that even make sense?

Posted by Bill Blair, Covington Georgia Realtor Covington Living Homes (Coldwell Banker Realty) over 10 years ago

Bill - cool.  You can pick a new domain name, create an entirely new blog, and post whatever you want to either one right from your AR Group or Individual Blog.  You don't need to go buy a domain name from godaddy or any of the other sites, we take care of it all when you signup and set it up.  Here if you need me.

Now that many members have had the chance to setup their own individual and outside group blogs, and we've had the chance to work out some of the initial kinks, (and there's a tutorial) we'll be adding the ability to search and link to "TOPICS" which is like having a category type of search on your blog sidebar.

Be sure that you are using the "Topic" feature when creating new posts, this will help index your posts for easy searching on your outside blogs.  You'll also be able to add widgets including a search widget that will allow visitors to search your outside Blog, or the web. Also look for more themes coming soon....

I'll do a post soon showing some of the Blogs that members have already created, they are coming along very nicely, but I'll let them share their own success stories.  There have already been quite a few....

The best advice I could give to anyone right now is:  if you're an Agent or a Broker anywhere in the US, or in ANY field of the Real Estate Industry, you're missing out if you don't.......

Get An Outside Blog and Domain right here on ActiveRain. No Joke!!

LAST TIP:  Remember to keep ALL your photos and images under 600Width on ALL YOUR POSTS.

(200-400 is optimal)  This will keep ALL your (AR Blogs, Outside Blogs, & Localism) formatted properly and looking consistent across all three platforms. This is one of the main issues we see repeatedly when setting up outside Blogs. Enjoy!!

Now the only thing I want to do is customize it (change name, info, etc.). Are those bugs worked out yet? I thought I saw an comment the other day that said the developers were having a couple of issues and they were working on it.

Hi Brad - I am trying to set up my new outside blog and am having the glitch I believe you referenced above.  I cannot change my info, nor upload a photo, nor customize it.  (There is no "save" button and am receiving a 404 page error)

I've talked to Rich about it, but I think he is very busy with the Rebar camp coming up so I hate to call him again or write again.

Any updates on when this bug will be exterminated?  (I am hosting a blogging class next week in our office and really wanted to show off my new outside blog and get others on board with it for hyper localizing..)

Very interesting.  I do have another outside blog, but my active rain posts always seem to beat them out and get better search engine rankings.  I think it is definitely worth checking into.  Can you customize the background for the outside blogs or do they have to be the templates?

Posted by Christine McInerney, The McInerney Team, Knoxville TN Homes For Sale (Great Life RE) over 10 years ago

Christine and Jennifer - Yes, google juice abounds in the "rain", and we're glad to see you reaping those benefits.  Currently we have multiple themes setup, but I'm sure as we progress and evolve our ActiveBlogs, your options in the future will be limitless.

A great analogy of this would be like a new born baby asking if he/she will ever be able to walk or run instead of just crawl?  The obvious answer to us is yes, but to a newborn (like our ActiveBlogs) the unknown and future is always full of questions.

We will only continue to get better adding more themes, new widgets, cool features and options allowing you to customize and maximize your ActiveBlog to it's fullest potential.  Come along, take the journey with us, and enjoy the ride.  :-))

Brad, my company logo isn't included in the list. Is there a way to get it in there? I think by FL law we have to have our company logo there somewhere.

Frank and Sharon - you can use either the "Elements of SEO" or "Legacy" themes, neither of these are branded, so you can add a custom header, banner, Logo, image, whatever you want.  We will be adding more themes in the future, both Company Branded and non branded templates.

Brad, Thanks. I am having a problem with the "manage you widget" section of the outside blog. When I click on it, it opens up properly, but it has a very dark background. So, I'm not able to read the information that is provided about each widget. I don't know if it's the settings or not. In looking for this problem on other blogs, I'm not finding any information about that problem. Can you help me please?

Hi William - I'm wondering if it might be your browser causing the issue. I just checked out your Outside Blog logged in as you and the widget tool looked fine on my computer and browser. (using firefox) Give me a ring on Monday and we can walk thru it together to see what we can do. My number is on my AR profile, call anytime at your convenience.  Thanks. :-)

Hi Suzanne - I'll have to go wipe your old domain name from the Outside Blog.  Wait a day or so, then go into your Outside Blog, click on the "Domain" link in the Black toolbar, and enter in your new domain name. (It's the box at the bottom) You only need to enter the name, no www, or http, and be sure you add the .com when you enter it.  Let me know if you need any help.  :-)
