The ActiveRain Stuff You Won't Find Anywhere Else on the Web

5 Important Tips - Outside Blogs

Here's 5 Really Important Tips for Outside Blogs

Now that many members have had the chance to setup their own Individual and Outside Group Blogs, and we've had the chance to work out the kinks, I've noticed some common issues that keep popping up as we're setting these up.  I wanted to share them in hopes it would save you some time and frustration.

ONE:

You do NOT need to go elsewhere to purchase a domain name for your Outside Blogs on ActiveRain.  If you setup your Outside Blog and URL or Domain name through AR, it is a 3-step process and your domain will be up in most cases within minutes.  If you go outside AR to purchase a domain name, you can still use it, but you'll have to point the DNS nameservers and for some, it's a PITA(Pain In The @$$) See Jodi's Post

This is the best way right here!

see below: (and yes, you do own the domain name, AR is just hosting it)

Once you click check availability, You'll know if the domain is available or not by what's returned in the box.  If it has a red dash mark, then it's not available, if it has a green check mark, then you can claim it!
Just click on the "Claim Domain" button and you're done.  Some new domains come up instantly.

  RED = NO  &  GREEN = GO

TWO

Adding your Posts to your Individual and Group Blogs is easy.  You can either create new posts or move existing posts over to your new domain and outside Blog, but you'll need to be in the edit mode, then select the appropriate boxes by placing a check mark in the ones you want to push your post to.  It's Fast!!

SELECTING WHERE TO SEND YOUR BLOG POSTS:

THREE:

Be sure that you are using the "Topic" feature in Channels when creating ALL Blog posts from now on, this will help index your posts for easy searching on your outside blogs.  Many other Blog formats have "Categories" or "Keywords" on the sidebar that can be searched and viewed by visitors, but your AR Outside Blogs will be searchable by "topics" and "local area posts"(Raindexing) Make sure you are using "topics" to avoid having to go back and edit posts later.

You may even want to go back and edit the ones you have.

FOUR:

Keep ALL your Videos, Photos, and Images under 600W on EVERY POST.  (200-400 is optimal)  This will keep ALL your (AR Blogs, Outside Blogs, & Localism) formatted properly and looking consistent across all three platforms. This is one of the main issues we see repeatedly when setting up outside Blogs. Some members are using photos that are 1024x768 or 800x640 and they will not look right on Localism or Outside Blogs.

You can see this post at ActiveRainGuide.com to confirm this format works.

Bay Bridge Photo - By Brad Andersohn The Bay and Bay Bridge - Photo By Brad Andersohn Rare Bay Bridge Photo By Brad Andersohn

FIVE:

If you want readers to be able to see your FULL SIZE photos, upload them to Flickr.com first, then place the photo in your ActiveRain post at 200w (as shown above), with a link to the full sized photo in Flickr.  This will not only look better on your posts, if readers want to see the full image, they can, but let it be their choice.  An 800w photo or image is just too big, it'll overlap and look weird on Localism and Outside Blogs.

There's your High-Five for this week ~

I am very proud and excited of what our team behind the scenes at AR have produced.  I'm looking forward to showing off some of these Blogs by our members and groups this week, they really do look awesome. :-)

Thanks Brad,

I am new to blogging so I am still in the early stages so I find your information very helpful.

I reposted a resent blog as an individual blog, but now I noticed I had 2 individual blog domain names, not sure how that happened?

Also, do you have advise on linking so many tell you to have as many links as possible but I don't want my website looking like a billboard.  Any advise would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Brad - Awesome !  You rock !  My question for now is that I was updating my outside blog last night and selected "RE/MAX them" which was a mistake as I lost our "The Somers" header and it does not appear to be a way to get it back... we dont like the colors or the theme at all.  Can you help us ?

Also, we thought something was wrong with the domain function as every name we picked came back with a red dash - rejected.  Even when we typed something in that was ridiculous it came back red.  Will try again later today but would love some advice regarding the header.

Thanks !  ~  Chris Somers

Brad - Can you write a post about using the domain names from our previous outside AR blog - the free version. Should we use that same domain name for the new paid version? Or point that domain name to the paid version? I'm confused at which way to go with that - or if you've written that post and I've missed it, will you please post the link?

Hi Brad,

New outside blogs are great! However, have not been unable to upload a new sidebar image to my outside blog: NewHomeMarketing.com

I go through the upload process and get a 500 internal server error? Any idea what is happeneing?

Posted by Lance Sonka (New Home Marketing) about 11 years ago

Awesome.  Thanks for the info, as I get ready to start this process.  One quick question... #2 has to be done for each and every post?  No master list of previous blogs we can check or uncheck?

Brad,

I see that you are not wasting any time getting into some of the telephonic discussion points we had a few days ago. Likewise, I appreciate your prompt response to my question that I submitted via the feedback button on the left margin of your post.  It's awesome.

I have not yet noticed  that you have addressed my question publicly but I would suggest that it would be good to discuss the process and how long users can expect to see their individual/outside blogs and domain showing up on Google and other search engines.

MORNING BRAD!  I am spending the day figuring it all out - thanks for explaining this in simple terms.  My questions (bear with me - challenged in this area):  regarding PITA, would you recommend just getting a completely different domain name - through AR of course -  rather than using one that I already have - especially since I have no idea what a DNS is to start with?  And is the outside blog just as easy to link to a current webpage as the free one?? -- Thanks for any help!  Gabrielle

Brad you are correct about hooking up an outside domain name that has been purchased through another vendor.  I had so many problems.  Finally, just picked another name and entered into the free domain space that AR offers and within minutes my blog was up!  Also, thank you for the info regarding channels....have not used that since I wasn't sure what it was about.

Posted by Jim & Maria Hart, Charleston, SC Real Estate (Brand Name Real Estate) about 11 years ago

Randall - it's a piece of cake, and you'll enjoy more of the pie after....  :-O

Laura - links in your posts to relevant sites are good, but overkill is not.  I can also remove the duplicate Blog you created, not a problem.  If you don't upgrade the first one and click on create new, you will get a duplicate blog showing on your "My Home" page.

Will Nesbitt - I'm on my way over to see you now. OK, I'm back...the reason it's not working for you is that you created 4 new blogs and haven't upgraded any of them. You have to click on the red link next to the Blog name that says "UPGRADE" or none of this other stuff will make any sense.

1. Click "My Home"  2. Click on "UpGrade" next to the Blog you want to setup as your outside Blog.  3.  Return my call if you still need help, just left you a VM message. :-)

Chris - I can help you, call me, nevermind, I'm calling you....and yes, there are some rediculous domain names that are already taken.  Probably the hardest part of all this is coming up with a unique domain name that you love, isn't rediculous, and that is available.  It's kinda like a wife!  lol~  I know you love yours, I love mine, and see?  They are taken.  :-)

Hi Debbie - I would get your own domain by using the 3 step process in this post.  You can keep the name of the one you already have, but remember it's a subdomain name under ActiveRain.  ie: Brad.ActiveRain.com when it could be  ActiveBrad.Com.  Your own domain name is really the way to go.  We'll take care of it all and it's really easy to setup.  I jsut setup 3 more today and did it in literally minutes.

You can call me anytime, sometimes it's difficult to articulate certain things in a 10pt. Times Roman font comment or post.  :-))

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Russell - shoot me a link when it's done, peaches and guitars certainly grabs my attention.  :-)

Eileen - picking a good domain name is half the fun, or should I say half the battle.  It takes some time to come up with one you really like, and then BAM!  It's taken already.  Just keep trying, you'll come up with something soon.  I was shocked when I found BestNameInTheWorld.com was available... and still is.

Lance, I'll take a look right now and see what's up.  I think it's because your image isn't 189w which is required.  I'll check it out.  I'll upload an image to confirm it's working, then you can go in and replace it. OK...I'm back, I just checked out your Blog and it's fine, the photo is there, it all looks great. Left you a VM on your cell.

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Dominic - shoot it over to me in an email as an attachment and I'll see what I can do.

Ron - these will start showing up all over google and the other search engines once they make their rounds and their robots and crawlers start picking them all up.  Jon posted a comment earlier already seeing top placement from some of our members creating these.

Margaret - it will automatically pull any localized posts you've written, you'll need to probably remove any you don't want on the outside Blog.  If you find some that aren't there, I was just showing how you can add them or take them away.  No master list, at least not yet.  :-)

Kam - you'd have to talk to your outside webdesigner about that.   You can combine them or keep them seperate, up to you.  I would have my Blog seperate from my website, in fact I do, I just have a link to both and in both places.  It's really your call, since you haven't setup a website yet, I'd start with the Blog, you may find that possibly you won't need a website if your Blog does everything you and your readers need it to.

Thank you Brad for the heads-up! Those are 5 facts I didn't know. Every time I stop by your blog, I learn something new about AR. I went through my old posts, resized all photos, until the job put me to sleep (ha), and added description where I could. Whew! From this point forward, shall be sure all tips are followed. (Glad I don't have an iPhone.)

Rich - I credited you back for the duplicate blog created, you can go into your "Billing Information" link on your "My Home" page and cancel the one you don't want. There is a red cancel link next to the blog name.

Then you can click on the one you're keeping and go claim a domain name for it, it's included in the upgrade.  Just follow Tip #1.  Let me know if you still have any questions after that.  Thanks.

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Marianne - LOL~  I can't imagine doing this over an iPhone but guess what?  I bet it could be done? haha...

I know what you mean about the photos, I had some videos that were 800w and they were just killing my outside blog and Localism.  Just fixing a couple a day is good if you have tons of them, don't kill yourself dear!!  :-)

Make sure while you're in there you are adding a topic, you had said description, I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing.

You were right, the picture had to be exactly 189 px wide. (The standard AR blog processed the same photo upload at 135 px, thank you for the clarification between platforms.)

I'd still like to talk to you about about a pending team blog launch here on AR soon, I'll call you...

Hi Brad ~ I've already forwarded one of my domain names per the instructions and it seems to have worked.  I can see it's going to take awhile to read through all these comments and figure out what I'm doing and where to go from here.  AR just keeps getting better and better!  Thank you~

Hi Brad!
I had never understood the title thing, so I will be going back and adding them! Thanks! Just an FYI...I tried a domain name several times and the red - kept showing up. The name was so unique, that I was doubting the results, so I tried them on GoDaddy and they were available, so there may be some kind of glitch on the domain search.

Thanks Brad.  Of course, I jumped the gun this morning and started messing w/ my blog before I read your comments.  I claimed my new url www.gotham-realestate.com on the blog that did not import my prior entries.  Is there anyway to import what I have wriiten previously on my activerain blog to that blog?  I hate to not have 2 months worth of entries.

Thanks!

Lance - try to contact me today so we can get your group/team Blog setup.  It's really simple and will only take a few minutes.  You know how to reach me.  :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Roland - the cost of the domain name is included in the upgrade, that's why I tell folks to just get your domain name on AR, it only takes seconds for your blog to show up on your new domain name when done through us.

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Paula - (and to ALL members) VERY IMPORTANT!

When searching domain names via the AR search box to see if they're available for you to claim:

1. No Caps, and no spaces!

2. Make sure you add the .com to the name you want. (EXAMPLE)  besthomes.com or activebrad.com

3. There are millions of names that are already taken, but there are millions of names that are not.
The most difficult part of all this is coming up with a name you like and finding out it's not available.

To see a sample that works in the search box, type in bestnameintheworld.com and you'll get a green check mark next to it, meaning it IS available, the red dash next to a name means it's NOT available.

DON'T FORGET TO ADD THE .COM AFTER THE NAME WHEN CHECKING AVAILABILITY, VERY IMPORTANT!!

I hope this helps, and clears up any confusion about selecting your own domain names via AR.

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Rich - it should automatically pull all your posts over that are not members only or associates only.  You can always go in and edit the ones you want there and the ones you don't.  Simply put a check in the box next to "Individual Blogs" or uncheck it while you're in the edit mode of your post.  Let me know if that makes sense.

BTW - Your Blog looks great. :-)

Posted by Brad Andersohn, ActiveBrad - 707.646.1876 (Executive Director of Education at eXp Realty) about 11 years ago

Okay, now I understand about the domain names...EXCEPT, should the domain name and the blog title be the same? (In my case, it would be very long)??? Thank You!!!

Posted by Mara Hawks, Inactive-2012 REALTOR - Homes for Sale Auburn Real Estate, AL (First Realty Auburn ) about 11 years ago

All the exploring of questions and connecting the dots is raising more questions AND ENTHUSIASM! So...on my Outside Blog...let's say I want to add a widget for the local University-sponsored sports schedule (because it has the local Tiger mascot on it & would be a great eye-catcher)...am I straying away from the task? Or being too creative?? Or let's say I want to REVIEW local golf courses, restaurants, etc., but don't want to list them individually in the separate towns on blogs...is there a way to categorize these...have links on the main page??? Gratefully, outside-of-the-boxblog in Auburn...

Posted by Mara Hawks, Inactive-2012 REALTOR - Homes for Sale Auburn Real Estate, AL (First Realty Auburn ) about 11 years ago

Mara - we will be adding widgets very shortly, and your posts will all be sorted by "topic" (Tip #3) so make sure you are adding a topic to every post.  The "Topics" will act as Categories is my understanding.  It makes sense to me since most people search google by topics and areas.  :-)

Todd - that's great that vflyer is going to create a custom AR flyer.  Just remind them that 600w is the premier size to work on all AR Blogging platforms, anything wider than that may cause some compatibility issues across all our platforms.

Great looking new Blog too, love the "Living Beaverton" domain, just left you a comment there.  :-)

This is probably a stupid question but..... are there any free outside blogs or do I have to pay for one? Just wondering if my blogs are really going anywhere without purchasing an outside blog.

Posted by Sherie Earley-Womack (Choice Real Estate) about 11 years ago

Sherie - no such thing as a stupid question. :-)  The ActiveBlogs that come with your own domain name are not free like the AR basic blogs.  The outside blogs are 19.00.  Your posts on AR will get google juice just as your outside blog posts will.  If you need any help, just let me know.  :-)

Brad:  Will AR have a muscle meeting with Jeff Turner about the real estate shows???  They don't "FIT" well on the outside (active) blogs when that post is along my side bar.  I've mentioned this to Rich also (and he said it was on one of AR's long To-DO lists.   But, I thought I'd put a bug in your ear too.   The width of Jeff's flyers are too wide for the parameters of your format.   Can we "SQUISH" our side bar to make them fit?

Posted by Christine Bohn, The Bohn Team, Gainesville FL (RE/MAX Professionals) about 11 years ago

Christine - Jeff Turner is "Top Shelf" when it comes to customer service, have you contacted him and asked if this is something he can do?  I'm sure he'll be very receptive and responsive.  :-))

I'm a newbie from Augusta, GA that has recently submitted a few posts. Now I know why only members can see my posts. At any rate I already purchased a few domain names from Go Daddy that I'm considering. They are:

1.Moving2Augusta.com                                                                            2.FortGordonHousingonline.com

This is a huge military, medical and golfing community!!  Which name do you prefer for a blog or for a website.

Brad - THANK YOU for walking me through all of this on the phone this afternoon! I finally did choose the outside blog name (after careful consideration) even after our talk on that LOL!!! You can check it out at http://www.realestateinnorthwestarkansas.com/

You are the best and I am so happy to be part of Active Rain!!!

Question: might be off topic and I could probably find in another post... but how do you get photos in a row like you did above? the 3 side by side? SO MUCH TO LEARN!

Posted by Nicky Dou, The BEST REAL ESTATE AGENT in Northwest Arkansas (Keller Williams Market Pro Realty) about 11 years ago

Hi Nicky - it was great talking with you today.  I just did a post on part of our discussion.  I made it a riddle to have a bit of fun.  Check it out.

To get your photos side by side, I set the size of each image at 200w with no left or right justification.  Then I use the space bar to create a small gap between them.  Remember, no image should be wider than 600w because 640w is the max width on any AR Blog post including outside Blogs and Localism.  3 images at 200 wide keeps them side by side without pushing them to the next line on a post.  That's it.  Pretty simple, maybe you could do a post now showing folks how it's done?  :-))

When I was considering setting up an outside blog I'm quite sure I read something about working with your meta tags. Now that I have set up my blog I can't find that information. Do I need to do anything to optimize my blog for the search engines?

Posted by Mike Eddy, Maui Real Estate Broker (Coldwell Banker Island Properties) almost 11 years ago

Hi Mike and Sheryl - the widgets that place local posts and categories on your sidebar should help a ton.  There is a description box, but not sure that's where I'd add metatags.  Let me know if you need some help with this, you can email or call me anytime.  :-)

Brad- Thank you for your help!  I have not quite figured it out but this is what I have come up with.  Active Rain has cloned you and made 4 exact duplicates to work around the clock and that still was not enough so they assigned one assistant for each.  Thanks!  Another question.  When I bring up my blog on the active rain website I can use the email function.  It will bring up a seperate window and you can insert a message - but when I go to my domain http://lisarees.com the email function does not work when I click contact Lisa.  Can I please get Clone # 3 to answer this question?
